Using Ativan For Pain
UpdatedAtivan has been used along with opiates for pain control in burn patients and people with injuries that require long term pain control for a long time in other countries. Sadly not so much in the U.S. because we fall behind in the pain control medical treatment. I am Trauma Surgeon from originally outside the U.S. and for the last 20 years we have been using this method of treatment. Ativan should never be taken at more than 2 mg PO unless you are in the hospital with constant medical supervision (BP monitor, O2 sat, ECG monitor, etc.) especially with opiates. I usually start at .5 to 1 mg depending on the weight of the patient and the tolerance build up. The reason being you can build up a tolerance to Ativan very quickly and it will do no good in the treatment of your pain in a very short period. I have read the feeds in this discussion and some of you are walking a very dangerous path taking that much Ativan at once. Your BP can crash or you can develop tachycardia and have your heart stop, so please be very careful with this drug. I am not the type of doctor that leaves my patients in pain and most doctors that I know both in the U.S. and other countries don't either so go to your doc and tell him to refer you to a pain doctor to manage your pain, and please be careful about self dosing, I can't stress this enough.

my fiance went to the ER with severe stomach cramping and vomiting. After 2 weeks in the hospital they still have not found the source of the problem. During this 2 weeks they have been giving her Ativan for "pain". She did not know what it was but was trusting in the Dr's and nurses to administer the correct medications. Since that time my fiance has horrible mood swings, almost called of our wedding and is now having severe withdrawal symptoms. It was not until her sister in law came to visit and asked why in the hell are they giving you Ativan for pain. At that point after we confronted the hospital staff did they stop the Ativan and put her on a pain medication. The next day 4 Dr's came in and apologized for giving her the wrong medication. We are furious and were treated like garbage after confronting the staff. I feel an apology is not enough. Is this a common practice in the medical field?
