My 79 yr old father has just been prescribed Aricept medication to assist in slowing down his short term memory loss & cognitive impairment. However is a very fit and healthy person other than his memory issues and we are concerned that the side effects of Aricept will actually cause his physical health to suffer. How long do the side effects last? would you recommend the use of Aricept?

Hello, Melissa! How is your dad doing?

What are his opinions on it? If he's cognizant enough to be able to make his own decision on it, then it is only right to let him do so.

Most side effects only last about 4 to 6 weeks, while someone's body is getting used to a medication. The common ones for Aricept may include nausea, diarrhea, anorexia and abdominal pain.
