Usa Equivalent To Trimebutine?
UpdatedI have irritable bowel syndrome and end up with distended, miserable abdomen and the inability to go to the toilet at all. The first time I had this, I was living in France, diagnosed and treated with Debridat (Trimebutine) and Movicol (a stool softener). I was so happy to get rid of this miserable problem. Several times in the years I lived in Paris, I had to take this medicine, but always with excellent effect. Eventually, the maximum dose of Debridat per day (6 pills per day) had stopped being effective. Then, I discovered "graines de lin" made by Arkopharma, which you can buy in the pharmacy. That often works for irritable bowel-especially constipation prone, which was my case. For years, I used those little individually wrapped sachets 2 or 3 times a day with extraordinary success. No more medicine. Eventually, I stopped that too and had years of normal bowel movements if I halfway ate correctly. Fast forward to 15+years. For one month or more, I have not been able to go to the toilet at all. My stomach swelled and I was miserable. I'm now on vacation in France, saw a Gastroenterologist and she said my problem was irritable bowel again. She prescribed 3 Debritat (Trimebutine) plus Movicol and things seem to be moving in the right direction. Interestingly, my General Practitioner in the US prescribed Senekot for my problem.
I had horrible 20+ movements with nothing normal about it and felt it a very aggressive medicine for my situation. I needed this daily, mind you, not one or two times. I had to remain close to home for hours until I felt things were safe. Here I am in France, and this is the second time a medicine I was prescribed in the U.S., I was told was a carcinogen, not to take it - Senekot, that is. The other medicine is Premarin, vaginal cream. This was made illegal to see quite a few years ago in France, but not in the U.S. Isn't it interesting? Back to the Trimebutine. I was prescribed this for 3 months. I will be in France a total of 7 weeks, so what am I supposed to do when I return there? Don't the doctors have any equivalent medicine for Irritable Bowel in the U.S.? I had 4 surgeries when I lived here, all easy, all free, and all successful. Why do I get the impression a lot of treatments and the medical system approach to patients is better here? I also had a serious problem in 1994. I flew to the U.S. for vacation and was passed around from one specialist to another, only to be not helped at all. When I got back to France, the very next day, I was sent to a good General doctor and he properly diagnosed my problem and immediately I got my life back. I went from being so very sick, certain I was progressively going to die to living a full active life with much success for years.

Hello Nefertiti,
Wow what a roller coaster of emotions you must have went through while dealing with all of this. From what I can read trimebutine maleate is the active ingredient in trimebutine. The company that makes it is pfizer and unfortunately there isn't a medical equivalent available in the U.S. as far as I can tell, which is really unfortunate for your situation. What I suggest you do is discuss this with your primary care physician and inform them that the other medications simply don't work and see if they can find something that works in a similar fashion to the trimebutine.
I'm glad to hear that at least in France you were able to get the medical attention that you needed and I would really hate to have it come down to you needing to fly out there every single time that you need to get treated for your IBS.
