Type Of Rx Pain Medication That's Not Addicting?

Updated

I recently became very dependent on Norco for my chronic back pain. I'm withdrawing now so I can go see a pain specialist (finally!)
I want to make sure u can get on (if per dr request) meds that won't take me down this road again. Withdrawal is hard as hell. However it important to note I have been rx'ed Methocarbamol and Flexeril, which I both cant take bc they don't do anything but knock me out... I'm sure the Dr will answer these for me soon depending in the diagnosis but just wanted some feedback re: other pain meds (no over counter, those are like candy pills for my pain).

Dependence can happen with anything that you take on a regular basis for a long period of time and some withdrawal effects will occur, if you stop taking it abruptly. Some, of course, are worse than others, but it can happen with anything from heart and blood pressure medications to Ibuprofen.

If you want something that's not likely to cause many issues when you stop taking it, then your recourse is most likely just nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories. There are some prescription ones that are stronger than the OTC medications, but it's doubtful they will do much if your pain is severe.

All opiate narcotics are going to cause the same type of withdrawals when you stop taking them.

There are some antidepressants that can help with nerve pain, but they are known to cause rebound effects, as well as withdrawal effects, when you stop them.

There are also some anticonvulsants that can help with nerve pain, but also have effects on mood, so they'd have withdrawal effects similar to antidepressants, plus the added risk of seizures if you stop them cold turkey.

Have you seen the doctor, yet? What did they suggest?
