Heavy cough ## I was prescribed Tussionex syrup for an acute bronchial infection, along with an antibiotic and an inhalant. I took the Tussionex before I went to bed, and was not able to sleep a wink all night. I had a similar reaction to another cold medication about 5 years ago. Is this common? Have others reported this? ## how do you treat Tracheitis? ## I TOOK IT FOR 3 MONTHS WHEN I HAD WHOOPING COUGH LAST YEAR. I AM 70 YRS OLD. IT IS THE BEST THING TO STOP A COUGH SO I COULD GET SOME SLEEP. I WENT TO THE ER at the hospital. The ER doctor said it was the best cough medicine there is. I finally could sleep. My own doctor did not want to prescribe it as it has narcotic or something but it is the only thing that helps. It is available and Tussionex works. ## Lu (# 1) - That has happened...

20 REPLIES UpdatedDoes this medicine have real codeine or synthetic? I am allergic to the real stuff but I can take meds like vicodin & darvocet. ## Tussionex contains Chlorpheniramine and Hydrocodone, the same narcotic as that in Vicodin, so no, it doesn't contain regular Codeine. Side effects may include: nausea, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. You can read more on this medication here: Is there anything else I can help you with? ## How long does tussinex extended release show in urine ## Diana, Since it is a sustained release formulation the standard 72-96 hours could be an additional 36-48 hours. These are only hypothetical. Folks have cleared in as little as 60 hours while others showed positive after 8 days so it's all relative. There are far too many metabolic variables so even...
7 REPLIES Updatedneed to know what color it is and the difference between colors ## What color and consistency is tussionex cough syrup? ## @Robin, My research tells me that Tussionex cough syrup is yellow/golden colored and a thin syrup like consistency. However, The color/consistency may be different depending on the manufacturer. You can learn more about this drug on the page for Tussionex Details Do you have any more questions? If so, please post back! ## It's yellow gold in color and a thick consistency until you shake it up then it's becomes thin or it was back in the day. I had a habit behind Tussionex like opiates.
3 REPLIES UpdatedAs a long time sufferer of GERD with Barrett’s Esophagus, I have been taking Tussionex since 2008 as the medicine of last resort to control severe bouts of heartburn based on a study reported in the World Gastroenterology Journal (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PMC2689423). My gastroenterologist has provided me with a prescription for the medication for some time; however, after the recent passage of a new law in New Jersey to help control the abuse of opioid prescriptions for the treatment of pain he has become reluctant to continue the providing me with a prescription for Tussionex. I would like to find out if the primary ingredient of Tussionex (hydrocodone) is considered a Schedule II drug under the definition provided in the New Jersey Controlled Substances Law (njconsumeraffairs.gov/Statu...

What dosage has your doctor prescribed? ## My wife has acute coughing at night. Instead of getting better, I'm losing my health.
3 REPLIES UpdatedI am prone to severe bronchitis from time to time. But it's been quite awhile. However, I took my 67 yr. old wife in to the doc to check out her awful coughing for the last several days. She has it so bad that her rib cage and muscles make her scream in pain. I asked about Tussi Gold for her, but was told they had no idea what that was! It's been 10 years since I was last proscribed Tussi Gold - what has happened? ## Hello, Scooby Do! How is your wife doing? I'm sorry, but I'm not familiar with anything under that name, either. Were you possibly thinking of Tussigon? It is listed by the FDA as containing Homatropine and Hydrocodone. The FDA classifies this medications as a narcotic cough suppressant, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects,...
2 REPLIES Updatedcough medicine ## This a liquid cough medicane :get sleepy after 30 minutes of taking med.; I take teaspoon at 10:00 P.M. before retiring: do not cough during the night so I get 9 hrs sleep: I forget alot. Is this a side effect of the drug? ## Has this cough medicine been recalled by the FDA or is no longer available for prescription? ## No, it has not been recalled, it is still available. I just did a search at the FDA recalls site. They did issue a warning on it in March, but that is all. FDA Tussionex Warning Click Here ## The reason I wanted to know is I have been very sick for 2 weeks and spent 2 hours in a doctor's office yesterday and saw a nurse practioner and I brought the empty medicine bottles that the doctor gives me when I have this real bad sinus/allergy/cold twice a y...
17 REPLIES UpdatedSeveral pharmacies would not fill the prescription, and they said it is no longer an approved cough medicine... This cough medicine worked...What is comparable that is available? ## No, Tussionex was one of the ones that did receive FDA approval. There are also several others that contain the same active ingredients that are approved, such as Hycodan, Mycodone, and Tussigon. Perhaps you should ask your doctor about prescribing one of them. They do warn that these medications carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. Has anyone else had trouble obtaining this one? ## Thank you...yes, I understand the addictive properties, but a little 4 oz bottle once or twice a year (that really stops the cough so ...
3 REPLIES UpdatedDoes tussionex syrup show up the same as 10/325 hydro on a pain management urine screen? ## If it's a comprehensive test that is sent to the lab (Toxassure, etc) it will show up as hydrocodone, and metabolites of hydrocodone (norhydrocodone, etc. ) - so make sure you're honest. ## Yes, they should both show up as Hydrocodone, depending on the test used, according to NIH studies. It would take a very in-depth study to detect the Acetaminophen and Chlorpheniramine, which is not usually done. The FDA warns that these medications carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. How did your test go?
2 REPLIES UpdatedI have cough variant asthma and must take tussionex. I was happy about the generic until I tried it. The suspension is not right. A lot of it winds up dried in useless chunks on the side of the bottle. Also, of secondary concern, it tastes and smells bad. I took my prescription to be filled and they only have half. When I picked up the second half, I was greeted by the bad smell when I opened it (at home, days later). I think this second half is the generic mixed with some reall tussionex. It's scaling on the side of the bottle now. So, this tells me it's the generic. The generic does not take care of the coughing. But, I paid extra to get namebrand. It seems to me, if that is what I bought that is what I would get. What can I do? ## The only thing you can really do this point w...
19 REPLIES UpdatedI have taken TUSSIONEX several times when I've had bronchitis. It really breaks up the congestion and helps with the cough. I got a bottle today and the consistency is like Water. My resolved has always been a thick consistency and gritty. I think it was watered down. ## Hi Debe, Given my past experience with cough syrup over the last 10-15 years, I've noticed similar discrepancies in other syrups (both OTC and Rx). In my two recent encounters, the codeine cough syrup my wife was prescribed also appeared watered down vs the last time I saw a bottle. Her OTC robitussin has seemingly been watered down as well. One thing I will state is that it has been several years since I had last seen or used any form of cough syrup prior to this year....but the thing is, it used to be soooo th...
1 REPLY UpdatedCOUGH MED. ## Is this a narcotic? ## Yes, if you refer to the drug monograph here: Tussionex you will see it contains Hydrocodone and from some manufacturers Dyhydrocodeinone. ## Tussionex EXTRel Cost me $50.00 co-pay and not worth crap. I'm still coughing just as bad.Not enough Hydrocodone in it. ## paid 67.00 for mine and I can feel the narcotic very well, though I don't like the feeling nine hrs after taking it I needed more the cough was bad all over again ## My former doctor used to prescribe Tussionex Penn kinetic Suspension for Bronchitis or severe coughs with migraine-like headaches all during the late 90s and up until about 2008. On one occasion I went to see him with a severe chest cold with local chest pain and high fever. After his examination, as usual, he would leav...
5 REPLIES UpdatedMy prescription was for tussionex 60z bottle. I got the generic and have medicare Part D and it cost $ 135.00. Does it cost that much everywhere ? I've had 2 surgeries for lung cancer and get pneumonia often. This is the only cough medicine that actually works and only have to take it every 12 hours. It has been on the market for a long time. Why is it so expensive ? ## Hello, Mellencamp! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problem that you're having. Unfortunately, I have no listing of the prices that I can check for you. Have you tried asking at other pharmacies in your area? It can vary from one to other, but if there's a shortage, the price might be high everywhere. One of the ingredients in it is Hydrocodone, which is a narcotic controlled substance and shortages ...
2 REPLIES Updatedhow strong is tussionex ext rel sus? is is stronger than last one i got that said hycodone? ## Hello, Richard! How are you? Without knowing the dosages, I can't answer that. What is the dosage on the prescription? Tussionex also contains Hydrocodone with Chlorpheniramine, so it's likely close to what you've taken before. The FDA lists this medication as being a cough suppressant, but it does contain a narcotic, so it carries the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth and constipation.
1 REPLY UpdatedI have tussionex ext rel sus cell thats 6 years old. is it ok to take ? ## Hello, Fred! How are you? No, liquids have very short life spans, they tend to degrade very fast. Many even go rancid and could make you sick, so a 6 year old one isn't safe to take. If you need this medication, you should see your doctor for a new prescription. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I took 6-year-old Tussionex Pennkinetic Susp and it worked the same as when it was new.
2 REPLIES UpdatedWhere can I get help finding Tussionex brand name in Houston, TX. Medicaid will only pay for the brand name not the generic. I've been trying to find the maker on google for assistance but cant find them any where. ## Hi Adrianne, The FDA notes that Tussionex is manufactured "for" a company called UCB Manufacturing Inc.; who is reportedly based in Smyrna, GA 30080. And from what I can tell, they may end up distributing it from there. However I can't seem to locate any other specific details mentioning who actually makes it. Perhaps UCB Inc. would be able to give you more inside information on who they receive it from at: ucb-usa.com/UCBCares; as well as the availability of patient assistance programs through the manufacturing company. Hope this info helps!
1 REPLY UpdatedI need a discount coupon for tussionex pennkinetic ## Hi Olivia, How's it going? Just wanted to let you know that MedsChat also offers a free Rx Savings Card that can be used at over 60,000 pharmacies across the US. It reportedly helps you save anywhere from 15-75% off your prescription. You can view/print more details in the link below: Rx Savings Card Some manufacturers also offer patient assistance programs to help cover the cost of your medication, for those who meet certain income qualifications. That may be something to talk with your doctor/pharmacist about on your next visit. Hope this helps!
1 REPLY Updatedwhy can't this medicine be found today. It was the only thing that would stop my mom from coughing. She is 86 years old and coughs so violently that I am afraid it is going to kill her. Her Dr. has tried many things but to no avail nothing has worked. Her Dr. says that this medicine has been discontinued. So why isn't something there to take it's place? ## Your doctor is either searching with the wrong info or he or she just doesnt want to prescribe it. As of April 1 2011 it is still available as Tussionex EXT REL SUS good luck!! ## That is correct, Tussionex suspension is still available, under Tussionex PennKinetic, as both that name brand and the generic. It contains the active ingredients Chlorpheniramine and Hydrocodone, so that is what the generics would be listed unde...
8 REPLIES Updatedhelp with price of , tussionex ext-rel sus we live on social security and its costing us 60.00 for a 4 oz. bottle of the cough surup, can you help?? ## Hi, DD! How are you? I'm sorry, but this website does not manufacture, nor sell any medications and is not affiliated with any manufacturer, It is an information only website. The best suggestion I can make is that you talk to your pharmacist about it, there may be some discount cards that they accept that could save you money on prescriptions. They are usually free, some run by the state and some by independent companies and your pharmacist can help you discover how to enroll. The other alternative would be to talk to your doctor about prescribing a cheaper alternative. Does anyone else have any ideas or advice to add?
