Trazodone Alternatives

I have been taking Trazodone for 5 years. Every year it seems I have to up my dosage. My Dr told me that 600mg is the max dose. I'm up to 500mg now and it still isn't working. I was wondering if there was another medication that's similar that I could take instead?

Hello Aly,

I can provide you with a list of medication that may be suitable substitutes but first I would need to know symptoms they are prescribing the trazadone to treat. Of course any drugs that I list are just similar to trazadone and you would need to discuss with your physician if switching to one of them would be a good choice for you.

Trazadone is approved by the FDA as an anti-depressant but is also known for it's sedating purposes. Assuming that your physician has prescribed you this medication to treat both I have found two other common drugs that are prescribed instead of Trazadone. Amitriptyline
and Mirtazapine (Remeron) are both commonly prescribed anti-depressant medications that have the added effect of sedation.

Again I want to emphasize that even if these two medications are prescribed for similar situations it will ultimately be up to your and your physician to discuss whether these are a possibility for you. I hope this helps.
