Is Tramadol a controlled substance, or is there any type of narcotic in them? I would really appreciate any reply. I would like to know ASAP if possible. It has been subscribed to my 16 year old son and I would like to know about the drug as soon as I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! Hope to hear from someone real soon. Thanks again!

@ orthodoctor: that's incorrect. Tramadol is NOT a federally classified controlled substance. It's non narcotic and is only classified as controlled in a few states. In the vast majority, it is not controlled.

There is no truth the statement that tramadol is more addictive than vicodin and Valium. In fact, it is LESS addictive than those two medications by far in low doses. The fact that it IS addictive is now more general knowledge. And it's not the doctors that need to catch up- its the drug company that made the drug. They did not do adequate studies. However, in higher doses, and taking even prescribed dosages every day for a long period of time often does cause physical dependence to some degree but NOT with everyone. And Valium and Vicodin taken the same way will pretty much always cause physical dependence. So that assumption is incorrect.

C 5-6 IN MY NECK THAT CAUSES BAD NECK, SHOULDER, BACK PAIN AND I HAVE MILD SCOLIOSIS OF MY SPINE.-------WALGREENS OR CVS OR RITE AID-----ONLY COST ABOUT$ 64 FOR 180 PILLS THATS HALF THE PRICE.-------of the internet .CALIFORNIA-------THE PILLS ARE REALLY EXPENSIVE AT THE PHARMACY-------I JUST MOVEd TO PITTSBURGH PA-------EVERYTHING HERE IS ABOUT 1/3 - 1/2 THE PRICE OF CALIF.

Actually tramadol is NOT a controlled substance. Perhaps it is in some states, but in most, it is non-controlled. That is why you can order it on the Internet.

Yes...it is a controlled IV substance in about 10 states.

Wiki has an accurate accounting of the states where tramadol is a controlled drug,

Ultram is EXTREMELY ADDICTIVE and the withdrawals are one of the worst things a person can ever experience. I know these things from personal experience. Just google "ultram withdrawal" and you will see THOUSANDS of people, just like me, who developed a 10-20 pill a day habit and went through the worst withdrawal imaginable....seizures, hallucination, cold sweats, hot flashes, ZERO energy, vomiting, etc.

I've taken tramadol for almost five years, after being prescribed sonny other meds, this one is not as strong, but it covers the pain just enough. I'm happy to be taking this now. I'm so much more clear headed then I was on any of the stronger narcotics, I can actually live my life more normally. And all these drugs are going to be inherently addictive to some extent., you have to control it., and recognize when your body is telling you it's too much. I've taken the same dose this whole time... On all the others I immediately became used to them.
All the others meaning: OxyContin, Vicodin, NorCo, codein. I'd take this rather then those anyday. I dont want a high. I want to be out of pain, so can pick up my kids, and be a good mother. It means the whole to be able to do these things.

It's a call you'll have to make and weigh out. I've read some bad things about the drug on this site... which definitely can sound scary. I've been on a minimal dose of only 50 mg (1 tab) per day for over a year now for neuropathy pain. It keeps my pain in check for the most part, before Tramadol, I was nearly suicidal with nerve pain. My neurologist has told me I can take more than one a day (up to 2) but I won't do it. If I had to take any more than that it would make me nervous because of things I've read (here mainly). I've not noticed any issues myself. Just that when it comes time for that 24 hr dose if I don't have it... my pain is starting to get pretty bad, so I find myself sometimes desperate for it if I've gone over about 24 hours without it.

I have a question. Ive been prescribed Tramadol as can no longer take anything with codiene, but after reading about the effects it could have such as a lot of talks about seizures, it scares me. I also have to take warfarin and read that a few people here in australia have died after hemorraging. (sorry cant spell :) yet some people are fine on it.

Only schedule 2 prescriptions have to have a handwritten prescription, at least in Ohio.

In May 2009, the United States Food and Drug Administration issued a Warning Letter to Johnson & Johnson, alleging that a promotional website commissioned by the manufacturer had "overstated the efficacy" of the drug, and "minimized the serious risks". The company which produced it, the German pharmaceutical company Grünenthal GmbH, were alleged to be guilty of "minimizing" the habituating nature of the drug, although it showed little abuse liability in preliminary tests. The 2010 Physicians Desk Reference contains several warnings from the manufacturer, which were not present in prior years. The warnings include stronger language regarding the habituating potential of tramadol, the possibility of difficulty breathing while on the medication, a new list of more serious side effects, and a notice that tramadol is not to be used in place of opiate medications for addicts.

Hi
I have been taking tramadol for headaches for the last 4 years. i take 500-800 grams a day. I have been told recently that tramadol could actually be keeping me locked intomy headaches and since taking them the original tension headache has become permanent. i am never without a headache - Do you think tramadol could be the cause of this? Also i have for the past 20 days been suffering from a pain that feels like a water infection. I have had my urine tested for this and there is in factno infection there. The Doc says it could be the tramadol affecting me and causing my irritation. Have you heard of this also? Thanks I'm pretty desperate and miserable now and would greatly appreciate any advice.

I have used it for severe cramps and other pains ! No problem, but I saw these when looking up side effects and all I can say is WOW! Pain is terrible from cramps and this helps... So I will stick with it until it becomes a problem. I have ran out before and did just fine! I guess it is within the person. Thx

Tramadol - highly addictive, gives you a false sense of happiness and can make your life hell. I am currently in the middle of getting of tramadol as I can not go a day without it, after been suscribed for a bad back 2 years ago. at first it made me feel as though i had a new meaning of life, like i could achieve anything and made me feel so happy i felt as long as i had the tramadol i could get on with my day. I was then up to 11 a day from 6-8 a day because the effects starting wearing of and i needed to take more. i then became ill and realised with tests i had more enzymes on my liver than normal, not to serious but can be if i keep taking the tablets. i have also developed stomach ulcers from taking tramadol this gave me a wake up call and i realised i had to come of the tablets soon. the only problem was i couldn't, i experienced hallucinations, flu like symptoms were i would roll around in my bed and cry in pain, i felt worthless, i had no energy i couldn't even bear to get out of bed and wash myself, eat, or socialize, the list goes on. i am now on 4 tablets a day with help from a drug specialist and a counsellor. i go to the chemist once a week to pick up my 28 tablets and its really hard not to take more than 4 when they are there, several times i have took more and have been left short until my next script and have experienced the upper symptoms. my life is alot different prior to the tramadol, i dont work now i dont have much of a social life and the tension between me and my partner is unbearable because i am severly depressed because of this. i know tramadol will effect different people differently but i know tramadol is a highly addictive drug through my own experiences and others. please dont take this drug, if u decide to please dont take it long term it really is a dangerous drug and habit.

as for Tramadol it saps people who are on the drug`s energy and the listlessness makes them not even think about withdrawing from the drug.
Is there kind of home detox which may work on this patients?

I don't believe it is considered either because I know with narcotics, you must personally pickup a handwritten prescription from your doctor and physically take it to the pharmacy (they won't just call-in refills) and with my tramadol prescription, the refills are called in by the doc to the pharmacist. I am on a minimal dose of one tab per day for 10 months and (50 mg I believe) for neuropathy pain and it is the only thing that worked for me to manage the pain. Side effects for me have been very minimal only a bit of tiredness. However, I am continually researching more natural remedies and cures as I would prefer not to take this drug (or any others for that matter) if I don't have to. It definitely has been a life saver for me though as my pain was intolerable previously.

Tramadol can be addicting. I was addicted to it for 2 years. In order to get off of them I had to go to rehab for it. I couldnt get off of it myself. My withdrawls were horrible trying to do it myself. So Please if you are going to give it to your 16 year old, make sure you are giving it to him! Dont let him take it on his own. Even though study say that it is a non-narcotic and some study say it is. It is a very addicting drug. I mean come on you feel good on it.

I've had terrible back pain for years and I'm telling you, Ultram works 100% better than Vicodin or meds like that. Plus it works for 12 hrs. vs 4-6 hrs for the others.
I don't know why it hasn't been considered a controlled substance yet, or if it will ever be in Ohio.YZ
