Tramadol And Withdrawing From It (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have quite severe pain and was prescribed Tramadol 2 plus years ago (am awaiting spinal fusion surgery). I hate taking any pain medication but find I need it. I would like to come off this gradually, and wonder how gradual that withdrawal needs to be. I also would like to know if there are any other pain medications I might be able to obtain and with fewer side-effects. I've tried Lyrica, Targin, but they had severe side-effects. I find Nurofen best of all for the pain actually; however, I have high blood pressure and cannot use this for a long period. Thanks

Tramadol is horrible to withdraw. I hv been on 13 yrs off on. So i know drill. Get tranquilizer 4 or 5 from doc, they wont mind doing that. Also get OTC 3 or 5mg tabs Melantonin for night. Worse part during first 2 nites feels like someone put elec prod in your lower spine all night & just crappy during day. So tranqs really help. Try getting down to 25 mg or less day, & take only at nite if u can for 2 weeks. Stop all then when you ready to carve out 3 nites to be up & take hot shower when feel strain nerves throbbing in back. Shower really works. I took 3 to 6 nite. Dont gv up. Takes 4 nites but 3rd nite u will feel better. 4th even better. Am on oxycoden now & not nearly as traumatic on body to withdraw. Wth Tramadol, i had to take little even if pain better, as u go into wthdrawals if u stop taking as u were. Not oxy.
How much are you taking per dose, and how often do you take it?
The FDA warns that Tramadol carries the risk of being habit forming, so withdrawing from it too fast may cause issues, such as severe nausea, vomiting, rebound pain, headache, delirium, and dizziness.
Ref: Medline Plus Tramadol
Thus, a gradual taper is best, and you doctor should be able to help you set up a plan that would work best for you.
All medications carry the risk of causing side effects, it's really a matter of trying different ones to find one that works well for you, without making you miserable. What other medications have you tried, so far?
