Tramadol After After Transplant Surgery

I want to start by saying I received a liver transplant in Jan. Of 2008. My liver disease was due to fatty liver disease which led into cirrhosis of the liver and was not alcohol or drug related. Well after transplant and some time out and doing very well the nerve endings that were cut during transplant started to grow back and I honestly have never endured a pain like that and after several discussions with my doctors they prescribed TramadolHcl 50 mg tablets at a dosage rate of 2 pills every 6-8 hours. My family doctor felt this was the safest route since it was not a narcotic drug. To make a long story short I am deeply concern as it seems now this drug has become addicting and I am very worried and do not want to destroy my new liver and my second chance at LIFE that I was given. It seems almost that I must have it and I am trying to quit cold turkey and just deal with the pain and I am finding it very hard. I have another appointment set up with my doctor to try to explain this to him and any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you

Tramadol can be addicting, it is a considered an opioid analgesic.

Has your doctor been regularly monitoring your liver enzyme levels? That would let you know if a problem might be starting.

Yes post transplant I now am getting labs every month. Liver enzymes so far have been looking good the only thing since doctor prescribed Tramadol is my Prograf( anti rejection medicine) level is almost at undetectable level and wonder if that is a product of taking Tramadol. I just had labs done this morning and will know more when results are back later today.
