UpdatedAccording to U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (Sept. '08 publication) tramadol is NOT a controlled substance. Is it in the state of Virginia?

It is considered an Opiate Narcotic, so it should be considered a controlled substance all over the U.S.
As of Jan 2010 Tramadol is a Class IV controlled substance in Virginia, if caught without intent to distribute up to 1 year in jail, if caught with intent to distribute up to 5 years in prison
Tramadol is not a controlled substance in Virginia. In Jan 2010 legislation was proposed to make it a schedule IV controlled substance but the bill died in committee.

Vernon, "should be" and "is" are two separate issues. Tramadol is NOT a scheduled drug on the federal level (regulated by DEA). It is currently controlled (scheduled) in only 5 states.
Tramadol is NOT an opiate narcotic. And as of 2012, per the Code of Virginia, tramadol is NOT a controlled substance. I have a degree in pharmacy, and was a nationally certified pharmacy technician. I'm not someone taking a guess or repeating what so and so told me. Here's a link regarding the original enquiry: lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604?000+cod+54.1-3452
As of now, Aug 14 Tramadol, Ultram is a controlled Sch IV substance.
Re: billb (# 6)
It is a mu agonist and for those including many Doctors: Mu is an opioid receptor specifically linked to the action of painkillers. This was a trick done by Pharma to put it in a different class of drugs and hook people. I know a prominent Lawyer that got hooked on it and lost everything. It can cause seizures also.
