I have a bad tooth that had so much decay the outside portion broke off leaving the root inside my gums as well as a hole in my gum were the tooth was. Should i have it removed? How will it bet got out of there is nothing to grab to pull out? I had a root canal done before i lost the tooth so I dont feel much but was told i have an abcess formed and that was the reason for the bad taste i had in the tooth. Would i feel the abcess if i had the root canal done?

A root canal removes the root of the tooth, so if you had one done, there is no root left in there to worry about, though there might still be pieces of the tooth at, or below the gumline that need to be removed. According to FDA reports, having an abscess would mean you'd feel pain, possibly a fever, and you'd have a swollen area near where that tooth was located.

As to having it removed, I can assure you that most dentists have been properly trained in doing so, and they will know what to do. They have tools that help them push your gums down, a bit, so they can get a grip on the remains of the tooth to remove it. It is also much safer than leaving a rotting tooth in your mouth, since that could cause other health issues, such as infections of your heart valves, according to NIH studies.

Is there anything else I can help with?
