Theophylline Discontinued (Page 8)
UpdatedI have been told that theophylline er is being discontinued. Is this true? I have taken it for years for asthma.
See post 130 below. Only some manufacturers have stopped. Others are continuing.
I'm not sure why people in some areas are able to get this medication and others aren't? Again, my walgreens gets the 400 mg. easily but have 100 and 200 mg. ER ones on back order.
Perhaps those who live in areas where their local pharmacies can't get the drug can contact a large mail order. Walgreens does mail order and I'd assume other pharmacies do as well, and if my local Walgreens can get the medication then mail order walgreens would be able to get it as they would be ordering in bigger quantities, than a store would.
My Walgreens was the first place that told me they couldn't get it anymore.
Like I said, Tackynut, try the mail order. If my local Walgreens can get it easily, looked at the manufacturer's website and said it shows it is producing it, then a mail order walgreens would be able to order it as that is national.
I did try mail order because that's the way I get 95% of all my meds and I have been in line for a supply for 18 months due to them not being able to obtain it.
Tackynut...wow...so odd that my local walgreens has no issue getting it now month to month and yet mail order can't do it? I go to a walgreens in San Diego, on Midway. Perhaps if you called that store they could get it for you and mail it? Their number is 619-221-0834. They even checked the manufacturer website to see the status and it didn't show it as back ordered on not being produced?!
I am now able to get Theophylline 200 mg er in Illinois. The copay through Walgreens and BCBS of IL has increased from $10.00 to $75.00. I checked around and I can get a 30 day supply from CVS for $15.00. It is now available through the new manufacturer. I gave the info posted on August 12, 2016 by Brownwyn to my pharmacist and he ordered it through his wholesaler.
Clarification, the $75.00 copay was for named brand Theodur and the $15.00 from CVS is the generic Theophylline both 200 mg er.
I just got a 30 day supply (90 tablets) of the 200mg (mfr. Pliva) for $52.25 at Walgreen's without insurance coverage.
same thing happened to me. bottom line is money, so i'm going with they want more.
We are talking about intravenous use in the hospital. Its not being used there any more.
So what is the scoop? Are we going to get our Theophylline or not? I can't trust that we are going to be able to get it on a regular basis.
I'm the author of Post 130 which lists who's still making what (and who's not making it).
Theophylline ER is available - but you may have to look, including in places you usually don't.
I previously posted I get 400 mg pills for my cat, who's on 100 mg daily for asthma. Ten pills costs me roughly $23. I get them from a pharmacy I don't really like, but the chain pharmacies in my town rarely have Theophylline. So I go to a local compounding one. They either don't cut pills or charge $10 to do so, so I take my cat's pills to his vet who quarters them for us.
My point: If your usual source is out, get creative. Companies are still making this, especially pills that are 300 mg or 400 mg (or higher). Your usual pharmacy won't switch suppliers or make phone calls? Find a pharmacy that will. Local ones often will do what the chains won't. And it often costs less.
Bottom line: Theophylline has NOT been discontinued. There have been changes. Fewer places make it, at least one because they had safety issues in the manufacturing process. i.e. they were doing unsafe things previously.
Doomsday hysteria may be fun for some, but isn't being proactive about your health or a loved ones far more productive?
My physician us the one who called me personally and told me that Theoohylljne was discontinue, that's why I panicked.
Just to check things out, I recently had walgreens attempt to refill a prescription of mine for 200 mg. theophylline. They checked all over town and came up with 47 pills but could not find anymore. They said that all their manufacturers said it was on back order. They have no problem filling my 400 mg. refills though.
I was recently contacted by my mail order supplier that they wanted to refill my Theophylline prescription. I thought "Oh, good! It's available again after over a year." So I authorized them to contact my doctor to get a new script. I got a notice they had received it and I would be alerted when it was shipped. Then a few hours later I got the same message I got last year - "There is a back order on your meds. Please call us for more information." I called and ask "Do you have ANY strength Theophylline in stock?" The answer was No and nothing similar was available. I'm not sure what I am going to do when my stash is gone. I'm already cutting the 300 mg in half, but I can definitely tell a difference in the way I feel and how my asthma is reacting. When the halves are gone, it appears I will not have a choice except to deal with the attacks and hope and pray I don't die from them. Sad that the drug manufacturers are being either greedy or stubborn in discontinuing this useful medicine for many of us.
Pliva Pharmaceuticals, aka, Teva, has not discontinued Theophylline 200. It's a large Croatian company that sells to my Walgeeen's. So far I have been able to get 90 pills at a time from them.
I asked my walgreens about Pliva, specifically, and was told they checked with them and others, and all were on back order.
It's just the 100 mg being discontinued my little dog takes it 1/4 of 100 at a time 200mg won't work
I filled the Theophylline 209 mg with CVS last month and when I went to refill they are out of stock and on back order. Same as Walgreens. This is getting ridiculous! I can have Theidur for $75.00 company which I can't afford, back to the drawing board.
