Theophylline Discontinued (Page 2)
UpdatedI have been told that theophylline er is being discontinued. Is this true? I have taken it for years for asthma.
My kitty takes the same amount and it has been on back order for months. My vet just ordered me some from a compound pharmacy, 50mg caps that I don't have to break like the tabs that come in 100mg. It's a little more expensive, but since I ordered 120 caps the price droped to $96. You may want to talk with your vet to see if this might be the less expensive option.
I was told by a couple of sources the active ingredient made by the manufacturer is sold for more $ to manufacturers of expectorants, such as that mucus over the counter item and cough syrup. Not as much money made producing the medication. I've called around and have 60 tabs of 100 to last for a while for my dog, but that's it. No one else has it.
I also have been on it over 25 yrs and have been so stressed each month finding a pharmacy that still has some !! I can't believe in this day and age and Big Pharma being able to make drugs like crazy that they cannot fix this problem fast ! I hope we soon can all get our meds again !!!
Hi: I get both "long term back order" and discontinued. I've not heard the increased demand. With so many of us depending on the med to breathe I cannot believe we can no longer get it, but I am getting desperate. Dr. found me 37 pills, but I checked with pharmacy yesterday and was told again they cannot get it at this time. What sections of country do have it?
I'm on Southern CA and my walgreens looked around at other walgreens to find some for me. I had managed to find a 2 months supply...after that...I'm not sure.
I am in NJ. The pharmacies in my area ate running out. Shaking my head that a drug this effective at managing asthma is in such short supply. Where the heck is the FDA in all this?!
Hi, I worked on this all day today and this is what I have found. Several wholesale providers still available. (found this through [email protected]). List on FDA website. In my area I found Rite Aide in California and also Walgreen's mail order (Walgreen stores in area cannot get). Hope the info helps. I know I need this med and sure you all do too.
I am in CA and contacted local Rite Aid stores and they said they couldn't even order it. And I get my meds from Walgreens and they said their suppliers didn't have it either. The web-based stores would also be dealing with the same distributors.
Here in Jacksonville, Florida, my local Winn-Dixie grocery store has had it since April 1st with no problem. You may have more luck with a pharmacy that is part of a grocery store or WalMart / Target than the big, stand alone pharmacies.
I did try Target, Walmart, Sam's, Costco and Walgreen's. They told me availability depends on whether there's been any demand on local supply. If none, it may be available. If high demand, it's gone.
Wow...so sorry. I was hoping I was onto something with my idea. :(
I should have mentioned, Lisa, I thought they would transfer within the chain stores. Because pharmacy laws vary from state to state, and because some pharmacies are leased independent entities under that chain's umbrella organization, they don't transfer inventory.
Very frightened. Been on theophylline 300 er 40 years. Have severe asthma. Take it with generic for brethine. Don't know what to do.
Do what I did. Look up pharmacies on the Internet in your area and just call and ask if they have your strength in stock. When they say yes, have them call your pharmacy you normally use and transfer the prescription. I worked with my Dr to ensure I could have a prescription at several pharmacies to get a 90-120 day supply. Be aware, price may vary, but be aggressive to build your supply.
I am going crazy trying to find a cvs that has my cats Theophyline 100 mg tablets , i can't just stop it on them no one has it says its back ordered and don't if they will ever get any m, great what about the cats been on this for 8 yrs
For over a month now I've been looking for the 200 mg extended release theophylline. Costco told me they could not get it as well as CVS Walgreens and Meijer. CVS did have a few left So I will be getting those today. Through my research I was told it was being discontinued. My pulmonologist knew nothing of this. I've been on this drug for over 25 years. Now I found out about some not so good side effects from being on the drug. I read that its effects on bones is like that of prednisone. Also heard it can cause osteopenia, liver problems, and heart rate issues. Maybe this is a blessing in disguise's but what other drug can you use in place of this that is not prednisone?
I understand your concern about finding theophylline, and its side effects. Keep in mind that all medications have side effects, all are very hard on the liver, thus affect digestion, thus affect bone density as we need to be able to assimilate the calcium we take in and put it into bone growth, not into the tissues.
I have been a holistic therapist for over 37 years and tried many alternatives to theophylline, wanting to get off drugs. Although I never found a replacement or made it off medication, I stayed alive, which is a miracle in itself as my asthma was so severe. I recently researched substitutes for this medication and found that the suggestions were prednisone, Advair and other similar steroid medications. I have tried all the other drugs and none worked like theophylline.
I just got my prescription refilled for 400 mg. tablets, and it was done easily. One of the pharmacy techs made the comment that this was a new offering, but couldn't confirm that with another tech. So I don't know if it is true or not. They told me the 200 mg. tablets were either back ordered or discontinued. So perhaps looking for the 400 mg. tablets and cutting them, even though they don't recommend cutting the ER tablets.
I don't understand why they would make 400 mg. but not lower dosages, very weird.
So...hope this helps.
On Dr Oz yesterday, they spoke of a new app for your smartphone called Blink Health. You can enter the drug name, strength and quantity to help find pharmacies who have the medication, and price. For this particular med, I would call first to confirm. This app might make the search easier.
My chocolate lab Henry has been taking 200mg 3x/day for a few months and now this ! My vet won't prescribe anything else and to have it compounded is triple the price. I am so annoyed.
