The Reason Hypotears Was Discontinued.

Loved Hypotears and used for years. I recently found out that it contains BAK (Benzalkonium chloride) as a preservative which has shown to cause cellular deterioration of parts of the eye. I am pretty sure that this is the reason it was discontinued. It is very upsetting to know that BAK was never listed as an ingredient.

Hello Russell,

I'm not positive that is the reason that this particular brand of carboxymethylcellulose sodium has been discontinued as there are others that also contain benzalkonium chloride that are still available on the market. There has been a lot of speculation as to why the brand has been discontinued as the reason was never officially released. Some speculate that the preservatives were too harsh while others believe that the cost to manufacture had gone up to the point that it was no longer able to compete with other brands.

Regardless, a few other HypoTear users on another thread have also suggested that people try "Systane Ultra" and "Refresh Tears" as suitable alternatives to HypoTears when no one else has it available. If this is the only brand that works for you I was able to find some on Amazon but the price was outrageous for the type of product.

Lastly, are you sure that benzalkonium chloride was never listed as an inactive ingredient because everywhere I've been looking it's listed. Even pictures of the product in it's packaging that I found on google list it. Perhaps it isn't listed on the packaging that you get from your pharmacist if it was prescription?
