No, you are actually never entitled to any prescription, at any time. No doctor is ever obligated to write you a prescription under any circumstances and the only time they are obligated to treat you is if you are in immediate, life threatening danger.
However, you also don't have to actually ask them to be discharged at that time. You can simply go to that appointment, as usual and then call them and cancel later, once you have something set up with a new doctor.
And canceling is really just a courtesy and to avoid you or your insurance being billed for it, there would be no legal problems involved if you didn't, unless you were doubling up on prescriptions by seeing multiple doctors at the same time.
So, it is your right to seek treatment elsewhere But what you can do, legally, is still go to your last appointment there and get your prescriptions, as usual. Then, when you have something set up with a new doctor, you can call and tell them at that time that you aren't returning. (I know some treatment contracts also require that you do this.)
As I said, as long as you aren't trying to cheat the system, so to speak, to doctor hop and try to get extra medications, you would be fine.
As a caveat, you should ignore this information if you have local/state laws that are different, since I don't know where you are located and I'm just going by federal laws.
Are there any other questions?
I was recently discharged by my painmanagment doctor because they don't accept Medicaid or family care and I pay in cash. I use my family care to pay for medication that I can't afford. I love my doctor and have been with the same office over three years I am now being forced to only go to in network doctors. They all refuse to give need my meds I was getting from my long time painmanagment doctor. Is anyone else having This problem I am very sick and in pain because none of the doctors in network will continue meds.
