Tetagam Injection

Updated

Dear Doc. I would like to know what is the duration of Tetagam injection (I mean a shot we get when we are wounded)? Many Thanks

Tetagam is a Gammaglobulin injection to prevent or treat tetanus. It is, sometimes, given as several separate injections, depending on the person's health and the amount that needs to be given, so for proper vaccination, you should make certain to get the amount of shots your doctor says is necessary, whether it be one or several.

However, once done, these are good for 10 years, before you should be vaccinated, again.

Side effects may include: nausea, dizziness, injection swelling and irritation.

Dear Doc,

I think that you misunderstood my question about tetagm injection.I asked that if we get a wound that entails to have a tetagam shot....what is the period of protection of this shot only..i am not speaking about vaccination

Thanks

I think they have answered your question. For anti tetanus vaccine, they have 10 years immunity... and that includes tetagam... within 10 years, even if you sustained a wound - you won't need another shot for tetanus. However, you need to have one again after ten years. Any deep wound sustained from something may it be a rusty nail or from broken glass should be given an anti-tetanus booster for it allows bacteria to thrive in that place of injury. For your own safety, if you sustained a wound and you haven't received a anti-tetanus for 5years, get a shot! And be reminded that anti tetanus vaccine is not a lifetime immunity. you need to have it for another 10 years or at least, three shots in a lifetime.

Dear Mitchylle,i reiterate my question in the form of an exemple... suppose you got injured in your hand (God forbid) and you havenot been vaccinated before at all...and your doc. gives a tetagamshot and says everything shall be ok.... Then one month later or 2 months later you get another dirty wound and you go to your doc.So your doc.will give you another tetagam shot or says:you got one shot a month ago and you are STILL protected or will say ..no you are no more protected and gives you another tetagam shot.so the question is what is the duration of a tetagam shot? Thank You again

I am not a doctor, but I have already answered the question.

One treatment of it is good for 10 years.

I'll try to give an example so you can understand what I and Mitchylle are saying.

For instance, say you have injured yourself by stepping on a rusty nail. You go to your doctor or the nearest emergency services facility and they give you this, to prevent you from developing tetanus.

And then, say a year later, you're out working and rip your hand open on rusty barbed wire, so you return to your doctor. Being that you were already given this a year ago, you will not need it, again.

Not only will this prevent tetanus from occurring at the time you are given it, but it lasts in your body for 10 years. Therefore, at any time over that 10 year period where you would suffer that type of dirty injury, that first treatment would still be protecting you from contracting tetanus, there is no need for another course of it, until that 10 year time period is over.

So, it works as an immediate prevention AND a vaccine.

Have I made this more clear?

Tetagam is not a vaccine. It is a passive immunization. Tetagam contains antibodies against tetanus toxin. If a patient is not vaccinated and he had a wound contaminated with C.tetani. Then 1 shot of tetagam is given intramuscularly. This shot lasts for approximately 28 days. So if you got injured at day 1 and took the shot. Then no need to take it if you got injured at day 10 for example...

If you got bit by a dog...instead of having tetagam..you should have an anti rabies injection... one of which is called verorab
and for sure tetagam is not a vacination..it just gives you protection for 28 days.. So if you have a new wound 4 months after the tetagam... you should have another shot again.

My husband was injected with tetagam and tetavax right away after being bitten by a dog. But he was not given by the doctors any anti-rabies on that same day. Could that mean that tetagam and tetavax also serve as anti-rabies and anti-tetanus at the same time? Why was the anti-rabies given at a later date instead of the first day?
