Testing Positive For Buprenorphine
UpdatedI take codeine for a back injury. Recently i tested positive for buprenorphine. I have never taken this in my life. How is it possible? Are there medications that can give a false reading in this situation, like antihistamines such as 120mg clarinase or other pain killers like tramadol hydrochloride or even the codeine phos i have been taking for over 10 years. Are there any foods that would give a positive for buprenorphine? I heard poppy seeds do. Is this true. Just trying to figure out why i have tested positive over 2 months.

Eating a large amount of Poppy seeds can cause a positive result for opiates.
The problem here, though, might be the Tramadol, it is a synthetic opiate and they have been known to cause false positives for other synthetic opiates, such as Buprenorphine.
The Codeine, however, is not known to cause false positives for synthetic opiates.

Are there any other questions?
thanks for the reply. i took tramadol while i was overseas as a replacement for codeine as there was no codeine. how long does tramadol remain in the system. i took it last on dec 30th 2010.
oh just one thing, i took an oxycodone 5mg just to see if it would help my pain more than codeine. it didnt. but i took it about 2 months ago. would that cause a positive for buprenorphine?
If you took it over 2 months ago, it wouldn't be affecting the tests now. Most narcotics only last in your body, for a urine test, for a few days, sometimes as many as 5 or 6, but nothing longer.

The only tests that have detection times that long are hair and tissue samples.
Does anyone else have anything to add?
yeah thought as much. just at a loss at to what could be causing the positive reading. the 2 tests were performed over 2 months, 1 month apart. apart from possibly poppy seeds as the cause i am out of ideas. my doctor is no help. how about anti-biotics like amoxicillin? ive heard that they can give negative positive results.
just remembered that i have been taking norflex on and off throughout. Just reading up looks like this is the reason. It can lead to a positive urine result for morphine. Would that include buprenorphine?
Amoxicillin can give a false positive, but it's usually for Cocaine.

I have to agree with you then on the Norflex possibly being the cause. I know it lists it as giving a false positive for Morphine, but from looking at other narcotic medications and reading other people's experiences on here with drug tests, it wouldn't surprise me for it to come up as something else, as well.

If you've been looking at various webpages to research this, then you may have also noticed the information they list about the urine drug tests. Many of them give these false positives anywhere from 4% to 50% of the time, because they are not professionally certified tests.
Most places are not required to spend the extra money and use the actual certified tests and the cheaper tests are well-known for being unreliable.
Have you and your doctor discussed this and the possibilities?
nope my doctor is 'too busy' to discuss the possibilities. She just assumes im in some 'methadone like' program taking sub. too bad ive never taken heroin in my life. guess its time to change gps. im thinking its either the norflex, or a mic of the norflex, poppy seeds and everything else mentioned. thanks for the help.
no way. the test for buprenorphine is completely different than the one for morphine. the only thing that can fail you is buprenorphine. that's how they tell if you're taking your meds properly when you're on it. it looks nothing like any other opiate!
I have recently tested positive for buprenorphine which I've never took, what could have caused this to be positive on a drug test thanks
Actually, I've been told by a pathologist involved in urine testing that codeine occasionally does cause false positives for buprenorphine.
Haven't used suboxen in three months and am on no other medications and failed Monday for it any suggestion on what it may be that caused this
Buprenorphine is a derivative of the alkalaid thebain found in chemical structures such as morphine and codiene. (google around to find some back up to this statement but i promise you its true) I am on Buprenorphine for opiod dependence maintenance and I recently tested positive for Morphine. I've never taken Morphin in my life (I was an oxycontin and heroin guy). It's because Morphine, Codiene, & Buprenorphine are all similar in chemical structure. Look it up. I'm glad I'm not the only one out there with this type of issue.
Some of the posts aren't completely accurate buprenorphine is an opioid not an opiate and there is a difference especially when it comes to UA testing. Upon researching it I found out that Wellbutrin can cause a false positive for Methadone but they don't care they just have their policies to go by so now I'm looking for a new pain management clinic.
