Anyone use this for chronic pain? How is it compared to meperidine (demerol)?
I used to use an electric wheelchair. Nerves pinching off in neck etc. hands drew up.. Through faith & devotion to God (daily) & finding good Doctors (myopractors, accupuncturists, some kinesiologists& chiros) using Zanaflex for spasms & demerol (mild dosage) for pain I am making tremendous strides & there is no crazy high feeling. I can function & get about now fairly well w/ only a cane & daily devotion to the Lord & simple isometrics. Good Luck & God Bless your healing

I have used Talwin for the past 20 years in Canada and I can tell you that it is stronger than Demerol. Your faith in God is commendable but I am sure the drug is doing all the work. I am probably addicted to it but can go several days without it without withdrawal. It comparison to morphine is true. But I can't take it due to stomach upset
thanx Roy how kind of you. I was hoping someone would tell me if they used the Talwin & had also used meperidine & could compare/contrast for me. Also I can find alot of info on Talwinnx but not much on Talwin, &/or Talwin Px or Talwin compound but thanx for your research time & consideration..How kind
Was able to dig up some information from the manufacturer's label for Talwin Nx (Pentazocine + Naloxone).
Talwin is a potent analgesic and 30 mg is usually as effective an analgesic as morphine 10 mg or meperidine 75 mg to 100 mg; however, a few studies suggest the Talwin to morphine ratio may range from 20 mg to 40 mg Talwin to 10 mg morphine. The duration of analgesia may sometimes be less than that of morphine.
TALWIN® Nx is intended for oral use only. Severe, potentially lethal, reactions may result from misuse of TALWIN® Nx by injection either alone or in combination with other substances.
Note: Pentazocine can cause a physical and psychological dependence.
Adverse Reactions:
Cardiovascular. Hypertension, hypotension, circulatory depression, tachycardia, syncope.
Respiratory. Rarely, respiratory depression.
Acute CNS Manifestations. Patients receiving therapeutic doses of pentazocine have experienced hallucinations (usually visual), disorientation, and confusion which have cleared spontaneously within a period of hours. The mechanism of this reaction is not known. Such patients should be closely observed and vital signs checked. If the drug is reinstituted it should be done with caution since these acute CNS manifestations may recur.
Other CNS Effects. Grand mal convulsions, increase in intracranial pressure, dizziness, lightheadedness, hallucinations, sedation, euphoria, headache, confusion, disorientation; infrequently weakness, disturbed dreams, insomnia, syncope, visual blurring and focusing difficulty, depression; and rarely tremor, irritability, excitement, tinnitus.
Autonomic. Sweating; infrequently flushing; and rarely chills.
Gastrointestinal. Nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, anorexia, dry mouth, biliary tract spasm, and rarely abdominal distress.
Allergic. Edema of the face; anaphylactic shock; dermatitis, including pruritus; flushed skin, including plethora; infrequently rash, and rarely urticaria.
Ophthalmic. Visual blurring and focusing difficulty, miosis.
Hematologic. Depression of white blood cells (especially granulocytes), with rare cases of agranulocytosis, which is usually reversible, moderate transient eosinophilia.
Other. Headache, chills, insomnia, weakness, urinary retention, paresthesia, serious skin reactions, including erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome toxic epidermal necrolysis, and alterations in rate or strength of uterine contractions during labor.
