Taking Oxycontin And Testing Positive For Hydrocodone
(Newest replies first)
Updated
I have just been released from my pain clinic for testing positive for Hydrocodone. I do NOT use that. I take OxyContin and fioricet (for migraines). They show I've tested positive for hydro 4-5 times. I have not at all taken it. Can anyone please help me?

Re: MadMan (# 11)
You are WRONG. Reread her initial post. Nowhere does she state she tested positive for Oxycodone!! She doesn't even mention Oxycodone! She states she was prescribed OXYCONTIN.
Paula... just a thought but are you sure it was Hydrcodone you tested positive for...or Hydromorphone? They are frequently mixed up. Oxycontin is a form of morphine, and so is Hydromorphone. There are several studies stating that some people taking morphine WILL test positive for hydromorphone because of the way your liver metabolized the morphine.
Re: MadMan (# 6)
MadMan...you need to reread Paula's initial post. She did NOT test positive for OXYCODONE. She stated she was prescribed Oxycontin and Fioricet....and tested positive for Hydrocodone!! Since Fioricet is basically Codeine....there ARE studies indicating that Codeine most certainly CAN be metabolized into Hydrocodone metabolites in the liver.
You need to check your reading comprehension BEFORE you make such insulting accusations!!
Ignore these people Paula. They are trolls who buy into the B'S that all Chronic Pain Patients are drug addicts. Just more of the same crap we have to face as pain patients. For what it's worth... I believe you. If you were not offered immediate re-testing, the Dr. Probably knows there is a problem with the lab they are using. Right now, due to the Enormous amount of urinalysis tests being performed, it is NOT inconceivable that mistakes are being made by these labs. Unfortunately, us patients pay the price.
In my research, I have come across several articles regarding raw morphine being either contaminated with other ingredients when imported, and/or patients bodies metabolizing morphine into different metabolites in urine.
When I find the articles again, I will post an update here with these links (if this site will allow it). In the meantime, you can do an internet search regarding this subject yourself.
Hang in there Paula and ignore these haters! You know what happened...what you did or DID NOT take.
Again, I stand by my initial assessment. You got 4-5 positives?? Your doctor should be talking to the pain management doc!! WTF?? Good luck...I'm done with this post.
If you read my initial post, you will see that I was prescribed OxyContin and fiorcet (which contains codeine). Therefore, of you look at the FACTS and lose your judgement, you will realize I did nothing wrong. (Other than not insist they question their lab)
Correct Paula, codeine can in fact test positive for hydrocodone but not for oxycodone! I stand by my initial statement, sorry if I'm wrong but I'm not. 4-5 positives? Your doctors need to be removed from their jobs.
Paula,
Since that was rectified the doctor must have apologized and reinstated you as his patient correct? If not I'd suggest someone is misrepresenting the facts. GCMS testing is an exact testing protocol so 4 or 5 incidents of false positives/testing anomaly would be incomprehensible since specialized lab.retesting is standard operating procedure in the event of an in office presumptive ua. The actual incidence of anomalous presumptive in office testing is approx.5% nationwide so errors do occur however retesting protocols are designed to correct these presumed erroneous results
You are making an assumption that is incorrect. Obviously, I was not the only one this was happening to there. I follow all rules strictly. The lab was not analyzing correctly. The instant tests showed no wrong doing. FYI there was NO wrongdoing. Please be careful with your judgements.
I am most certainly NOT getting my meds from anywhere other than Walgreens pharmacy. Did you think that maybe the clinic was using a lab that didn't differentiate between the codeine and the hydrocodone. Because that's exactly what my PCP told me could be the issue. I am insulted by your statement and would have never posted the question if I had done anything wrong.
I did find this notation although it should be a small amount of hydrocodone...
A small amount of hydrocodone may be evident with oxycodone administration due to manufacturing impurities; high amounts of oxycodone should be present in these cases.
Sorry EP, I haven't found any research stating your body can turn hydrocodone into oxycodone? Also, pain management clinics use gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC/MS) for testing and you will not get a mistake with GC/MS testing. Hate to say it but Paula is getting her pills from somewhere other than a legit pharmacy with a legit Rx???
I did another test and it was fine. Only happened to me once but they knew I didn't use it based on my history. I was told it can metabolize into vicodin and I do have liver problems from my medical health problems.
it happened once to me. you can metabolize some meds that turn into Vicodin in your urine. Did they do gas chromatic test on the samples? If so, don't know what to tell you.
A few years ago I was drug tested. I take OxyContin for pain but it showed Hydrocodone. I have not taken that for over 20 years. I am getting tested again and am worried I will again have a false positive.
Paula
Actually you should have been dismissed after the first positive for an UNPRESCRIBED CDS.That you didn't seek answers or remedial action after a proported false positive speaks to your culpability in this test result.Any professional who would continue prescribing after 3 or 4 positives was indeed commiting malpractice by indiscriminately prescribing controlled dangerous substances to you.Its a little late to cry foul now. sorry just being real. That's why suboxne and methadone treatment centers exsist. No one is immune from the disease of addiction. Please seek rehabilitative services before its to late....
Do not take medications that are not prescribed for you.
