Taking Keflex

Has anyone ever been prescribed Keflex propholactically for a period of 90 days (500 mg for 90 days)? In my case, it is being done due to a UTI with the Klebisiella Planticola bacterium. Got the infection 3 times and a 5-day course of 500 mg 3 x a day did not eliminate it. I feel very sick on this drug but we have to get rid of this infection. I have 60 days left and am praying to God, it will kill the bacteria. My doc has also prescribed Ellura (a cranberry tablet) to start taking right away in order to prevent the bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall.

Hello, Shannie! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problems you've been having.

Yes, a long course of antibiotics is usually prescribed to prevent further infection, or to ensure full eradication of the bacteria.

The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

What types of symptoms are you experiencing? Your body should get used to it pretty soon and the side effects should start to taper off.

Hi, Verwon. Thank you so kindly for taking the time to reply. It is appreciated and it is nice to know the regimen I am on is what I need to do.

I have had really bad nausea, headaches, and some dizziness. Today seems to be the first day that the symptoms are not as bad as they have been. I eat yogurt and probiotics to ward off the diarrhea and that seems to help. I also feel depressed and not my normal self, but I think that is also a common side effect.

I have been on this drug since January 7 when the first three courses started. The longer course I am now on will be completed on May 17 or so. The Klebisiella bacterium is a tough one to fight and nobody here had ever heard of it until I got it (live in S.D.). So, we will see what happens. I have been worried such a long dose could hurt my kidneys, but I think that worry should not be a concern.
