Taking Cipro With Vitamin D

Can I take a 500 mg Cipro tablet after I took my Vitamin D supplement? The antibiotic is for a small boil.

Dear Deb,

Vitamin D is naturally present in our bodies from sunlight. I don't mean for this to come off as sarcastic in any way, but to my understanding Ciprofloxacin does not interfere with what's otherwise naturally occurring in our bodies (with the exception of reducing beneficial gut flora - and that could be replenished with prebiotics/probiotics). However I believe most vitamins and minerals in their raw form should be fine to take alongside it. I am also speaking from personal experience.

NOTE: According to a Walgreen's disclaimer, "sulfa antibiotics in particular can reportedly cause photosensitivity", in which case, taking a Vitamin D supplement instead of being out in the sun would probably be the safest method of acquiring/accumulating Vitamin D. **Fortunately, Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic of the quinolone family and has no apparent relation to the sulfa drugs within the sulfonamide family. Though this information is just something to keep in mind.

Cipro does interact with mineral supplements containing zinc, calcium, iron although mostly I think it just limits absorption or efficacy of the antibiotic.
