Tab Prednisone 10mg

Need help with tablet count for prescription. I'm a student and I have to calculate the number of tablets needed to fill the rx. Prescription reads Prednisone 10MG # QS. The SIG is:

30mg bid x 2d
25mg bid x 2d
20mg bid x 2d
15mg bid x 2d
10mg qd x 2d
5mg qd x 2d (then stop)

I also need help with writing the patient label based on this rx ... Thank you. Alan

Hi Alan,

I'm not quite familiar with your method for calculating the number of pills. Is there a type of formula you are following to get where you are? It's definitely something that one would consider to be as simple as putting the right number of pills into the right container, but I can see that it is much more than just that.

I'm not sure if they apply to what you are doing here, but if not I'll see if I can locate any other information on writing a patient label...Just a thought, but maybe you could use other pre-made prescription labels as a template base for yours, being that most are generally the same in appearance?

363 tabs needed for this dosage but based on the mg.s the pt will need to break them in half...it makes more sense to rx 5mg tabs

You need 21. Not 363. If using 10 mg you would need as follows.

30 mg 2d = 6
25 mg 2d = 5
20 mg 2d = 4
15 mg 2d = 3
10 mg 2d = 2
5 mg 2d = 1.
Using the above and splitting the 10 mg in half for the 5 mg needed. You would need 21

42 tablets. 5mg. It is called a tapered dose. They also sell them in a taper packet.
