Topamax User For A Year

I was prescribed topamax for migraines and was told i would get side effects of weight lost and depression ( was nervous to use because have suffered from eating disorders and depression before. I was completing my final year of high school and suffered bad migraines from increased studies. I started off taking 25mg then increased to 50. When I first start I felt fine, migraines were decreasing, expect I was eating alot less after being on it for about 6 months I only ate 2-3 times a week and had lost 17kg. I had no energy because I never wanted to eat and I had to force myself to eat and it was hard. I found myself very depressed at times. Then I stopped taking it and found myself even more depressed. I have started taking them again because I am studying again but haven't notice much change to appetite but my mood is very down.

As to the appetite problem, in case it happens again, you really just have to make yourself be practical and logical there. I understand that it's hard, but you have to make yourself eat, you know it's a necessity, so you just have to make yourself do it.

Many times I don't have an appetite myself and I have never been very into food, so I would forget to eat. The problem is that as an heart patient north of 40, my average is usually only about 117 pounds, sometimes I hit 120, but it rarely stays there. Thus, I really can't afford to lose much, at all.

So, what I did is to use a reminder app in my cell phone that plays a tone and shows the message on my iPhone's screen to remind me to eat. Though I may not always feel hungry, after awhile the repetition created a habit and I go out and make something to eat at those times, even without using the app anymore.

For the depression, have you talked to your doctor about it?

They may be able to provide with another medication, or even an idea for an over the counter supplement that you may be able to take, while on the Topamax, to help with it.

you seem to be suffering from major depressive disorder , consult a psychiatrist asap , for migraine u could take other drugs rather than this which is an anti psychotic it could lead to depression . consult general physician for migraine and a psychiatrist too so that he can taper the dose of topomax to get rid of it slowly.

I took topamax for approximately 1 yr. for the lessening of migraines. I've had migraines for 25 yrs. I started slowly with 25 gr. and increased to 100 daily. I developed serious side effects. I started with tingling if face and hands, hair loss, nervousness, loss of appetite, confusion, memory loss, dry mouth and unable to complete a sentence! After several months I got about 4 migraines as opposed to 12. However, I ended up losing my job! My family was upset with how easily I kept repeating myself. I could not handle pressure, whic caused me to go off! I am normally a super happy, super nice otherwise super healthy 50 yr old mom that loves to work out regularly. I take no other medications and have no other health issues. I loved that I went from a size 12 to a size 2 with a weight loss of 30 #
I have been off topamax for 18 mos. over the past 2 mos. I put on 14#. Would it be bad to go back on it for the weight loss?!
