Swimmers Ear With Treatment Worse In 1ear Better In The Other
UpdatedI went to the doctor yesterday for swimmers ear in both ears. The problem had started a day before. When I went to the Doctor I was managing pain very well with Naproxen. I was given 500 mg Ciproflaxcin oral 1 pill 2 x daily and ofloxacin otic solution 0.3% 10 drops each ear 1 x daily. There is absolutely no relief in my right ear. It is actually much worse than when I went too see the Doctor 34 hours a go.Very swollen inside ear and face around ear is swollen and hot to the touch. I can not hear out of this ear, extreme pressure feels like heat in my ear and sharp pain as well as throbbing. I slept all night with a heating pad on my ear.The left ear however, is much better. So far I have taken 4 of the pills and have used the drops 5 times. I called the doctor today and she ordered me 20 mg prednisone 1 tablet daily for 3 days. The pharmacist told me to stop over counter pain relievers because the prednisone is " heavy duty" and will take care of the pain. I took the first Prednisone 2 hours a go and my ear is still very swollen and very painful. I don't take any more medication until tomorrow morning. Why do I feel such relief in one ear while the other ear is getting worse rather than better?

Hello, Carla! How are you feeling? I'm very sorry that you're so miserable.
I can't really give you a specific answer, it could just be that the infection was already worse in that ear, or it may have been infected with a different type of bacteria.
The general rule with antibiotics is that if they're working, you shouldn't see any worsening of your condition after taking them for a full 24 hours and you should start to see improvement after taking them for a full 3 days. Thus, if this continues, even while taking the Prednisone, you might need a different antibiotic.
Antibiotic side effects may include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Typical side effects of Prednisone might include nausea, dizziness, headache, weight changes, mood swings and fluid retention.
It's odd for swimmers ear to get this bad, how long had you been showing symptoms?
