Has anyone used the new SUPREP kit before a colonoscopy?
Would like any comments about taste, ease or side effects.
Thanks!
My doctor told me that the straw (and I use 2) gets the Suprep beyond a lot of taste buds. It went down in four sucks - followed each time with a bite of banana popsicle. Easiest prep ever out of the four previous ones....
My second 10-year colonoscopy is scheduled for 8am tomorrow morning. I took a 10 oz. bottle of over the counter magnesium citrate at 10 am and have made about 10 trips to the bathroom. My prep instructions have me taking the first dose of Suprep at 5pm (in two hours). All of the posts have been so helpful! I started a low residue diet on Friday and partially fasted yesterday (some cooked potato and 1/2 avocado). I'm chugging down plain coconut water and electrolyte waters all day and feel pretty ok.
I see most folks have the second dose scheduled for 3am - my prep sheet has me taking the second dose at 10pm tonight for the 8am appointment. Not sure why there is such a discrepancy but hopefully all will go well and I'll get a little sleep tonight. Thanks for all of the good information and wish me luck!
I had my colonoscopy yesterday. On Monday, I drank the magnesium citrate. Tuesday night I drank the first dose of Suprep and had a hard time drinking the whole thing. Yesterday morning at 6 AM, I drank the second dose of Suprep over a 15 minute time period. After an hour, I threw most of it up. Luckily, I was able to do the colonoscopy and everything turned out fine. In five years, I hope they come up with something better to take. To think that I would rather drink GoLightly, is really saying something about Suprep!
In case anyone wants the followup: my first dose of Suprep took 2 hours to begin working and lasted on and off for one hour. Getting up at 0330 and doing the second dose is a little more difficult especially coming out of a sound sleep. That dose only took :45 minutes to start working and lasted for about :30 minutes. Colonoscopy was a breeze. They now use propofol instead of versed. Much quicker recovery. Found 2 small polyps but my colitis is in remission. Hooray. No chills, no nausea, no vomiting, no headache - just the discomfort of a distended stomach from 48 oz. of fluid each dose - using tap water to mix and chugging (no straw) with a swig of Gatorade after the prep part. Why prolong the unpleasant step? Also, brush your teeth afterward - you'll feel "cleaner". Kill that aftertaste.
Good luck to the next patient.
So, tomorrow is my once every 3 years colonoscopy (family history). I just took the first dose of Suprep, and while I'm awaiting the "cleanout", I thought I would reiterate some of my previous suggestions. Set up your mixture and 2 glasses of water before you do anything else. First, use tap water and NOT cold water as a mix. It's not surprising that a repeated theme on this thread is "I got chills after drinking it". Well, no wonder! You added cold water. Tap water temperature goes down easily. It's not the most pleasant tasting stuff, but if you drink it quickly, and swish a little Gatorade or apple juice in your mouth afterwards, the taste goes away. Personally, I take a deep breath, throw my head back and chug the 16 ounces (just like a college kid probably drinks beer). None of this "use a straw" technique. (If you want a long drawn out procedure, use the straw). I've never chugged anything before, but it's not difficult. Next, I chug the water. .The first 16 ounces are fairly easy. The second 16 take a little more willpower. So now, I've finished the first dose in 2 minutes - and I wait. I know, it's 48 ounces of fluid I've just downed, but your stomach will hold a lot more than that (especially since it's supposed to be empty). I am NOT a big person. Hope this helps. It's my 3rd or fourth use of Suprep, and it's way easier than the other preps. Good luck. Beats the alternative!
I had my colonoscopy today. The suprep was no fun. I took the first dose yesterday afternoon. I had to do apple juice chasers an sucked on ice cubes.
It made me feel so nauseous. I wasn't sure if I would keep it down. Luckily I did. It worked within 1/2 hour.
Then I had to get up early and take the second this morning. This was much harder. I got it down. I could barely drink any of the 32 oz. that I was supposed to drink afterwards. I threw up everything an hour later.
Luckily they were still able to do it. I had one polyp.
I slept the whole day afterwards.
Suprep really does taste like salty grape cough syrup.
Overall the hardest part of the whole thing was keeping it down and not throwing up.
The two pieces of advice that brought me the most comfort during the prep:
1) Have a means to keep warm - blankets, heating pads, hot water bottles, hats, etc.
2) Have someone there with you. I don't mean in the room, but someone you can call to should you need them.
Very easy to use. Chill it in the fridge for at least three hours. Mix with Gatorade or something tasty. It works with very few miserable side effects.
My doc advised me to take a bottle of magnesium citrate the first day. On the second day drink suprep with 16 ounces of water, plus two more 16 ounce bottles of water. On the day of the procedure drink the second dose with 16 ounces of water, plus 6 ounces of water. I wonder why I was advised to drink only 6 ounces of waterand not 32 ounces.
This was my 4th colonoscopy. SUPREP is by far the easiest method with the least side effects. I recommend chilling the prep bottles first and definitely using a large straw. I was able to take the 1st dose (6 oz SUPREP mixed with 10 oz water) in 4 chugs, following each chug with cold limeade. I had no nausea, no cramping, and the taste was not too terrible. The limeade took care of any after taste. Of course I wasn't exactly looking forward to the 2nd dose, but by the time that came around I was pretty cleaned out. Like others have said, I would also recommend a liquid diet for 2 days before your colonsocopy, and not just one, if at all possible. I slept throught the night, was only slightly chilled but a blanket kept me comfortable, and was able to make it to the bathroom in plenty of time. Please don't let fear of the prep keep you from having a colonoscopy. After reading some of the posts on here I was pretty nervous, but no problems. Colon cancer runs in my family so I will have to have colonoscopies on a regular basis. I believe SUPREP is the best prep available right now.
Took it 2 hours ago. Nothing yet...:)
YES! I remember when they told me I'd be doing a split prep (having done 4 colonoscopies before with only the day before prep), I looked up info on the internet and saw photos of the difference the second dose makes taken on the day of he colonoscopy. Overnight a brown coating forms on the inside of the colon with just one prep. The second prep shows even flat, just forming polyps. Amazing difference.
My first bottle of Suprep has me running clear. Do I still need to take the second bottle?
After five colonoscopies, I think Suprep is by far the easiest one I have ever used. I am sorry you had problems. I will beg for it every time!
second dose was not too terrible. Colonoscopy was a breeze.
Was heavily sedated but although awake felt nothing whatsoever,
and even watched some of it on the monitor. Entire procedure took
15 minutes and doctor said come back in 10 years. Don't be frightened
of this procedure, it honestly is no big deal.
I posted last night before my colonoscopy. I did not like this prep at all. It tasted awful, awful. I still have a mild headache, 27 hours after the first dose. It took forever for me to fall asleep last night so I only had 4 hours sleep before it was time to wake up for the second dose. I also had some feelings of anger and rage. I don't know if others have had this experience with this prep but I thought I would share just in case my experience was atypical. Waiting 10-12 hours knowing you have to drink that stuff again is not fun at all! I had to urinate a lot during the waiting time at the hospital because I just drank 48 ounces of liquid. I kept having to get up to use the bathroom while we juggled my I.V. and I feared I would pee all over the table as soon as they put me under. It also requires a later arrival time for the procedure. I didn't go back until 11:00 a.m. I would have preferred an earlier time. My poor nurses paid the price because I was so cranky. I won't do this prep again and I hope that 10 years from now they have a better method. My brother is supposed to use this in two weeks. I will strongly advise against using this one.
I absolutely use a straw! It gets it past the taste buds that make it taste awful!!! I use TWO straws and get it down twice as fast!!! Then I take a bite of a banana popsicle and have no bad taste ever!
Drink it cold. Mix with Gatorade and it really is not bad. Do not use a straw.
Has anyone else had an inability to sleep? I took my first does at 5:00 p.m. I had to gag the stuff down. It takes like cough syrup only salty. The restroom part wasn't bad. I put in a movie as I started drinking everything. I was out of the potty by the time the movie was over. I have a headache when I lay down and my stomach is rumbling. I am a little nervous that I will not be able to keep the second dose down. I plan to start at 3:45 and maybe just maybe get a little nap before I have to be at the hospital at 8:45.
This is my first Colonoscopy Prep so I have very little to compare it to. Drank the SUPREP last night and again this morning (just about 30 min ago). I was prepared for the worst. It is really not bad at all. I kept it in the fridge for the week prior so it was icey cold. Mixed with gatorade and drank it down. I found it to be a lot like the cough syrup in taste although it was hard to taste. It worked predictably and without too much upset. I do have the chills as someone said above. I would recommend it to anyone for their next procedure. Keep it cold - mix with gatorade or something pleasant and good luck.
