Has anyone used the new SUPREP kit before a colonoscopy?

Would like any comments about taste, ease or side effects.

Thanks!

I'm 22 years old and have dealt with IBS since I was 14. I had a really bad bout this past summer and my doctor recommended a colonoscopy, which is why I'm taking the SUPREP. It was really rough to get the first bottle down. The taste is awful... About 15 minutes later, it started to clear out my system and then I got nauseous and threw up. After that though, I feel better other than the diarrhea, which was expected. We'll see how the second dose goes. After reading all the comments here, I'm probably not going to finish all of the second dose. I only weigh 115 and could probably get away with it.

I took SUPREP for the first time at 5PM today for a colonoscopy tomorrow morning. After all the comments on the taste, and side-effects, I was a bit worried but after cooling it beforehand and using a straw, I found drinking it was a non-event. It took about 15 seconds, and the taste was rather pleasant. Someone mentioned sediment at the bottom but mine was clear and there was nothing like that.

On the other hand it hasn't done much for me, as I've only gone to toilet a couple of brief times. Hopefully the one in the morning will finish the job for a successful examine, my second.

Don't worry, it will work when you least expect it.

Well, I don't know about "new", but what I got was two bottles of Suprep and a plastic cup. It tasted like a cherry-flavored salt lick, and the stomach cramps were painful, but not as bad a diverticulitis.

Let me preface this by saying I'm a huge chicken when it comes to medical procedures. The thought of a colonoscopy was something I was avoiding given the stories I've heard from my parents. But I read an article in the local paper about a very position colonoscopy experience. I contacted the journalist and he gave me the name of the doc. Given my family history, he recommended a colonoscopy to help diagnose the issues.

The doc prescribed SuPrep as prep for the procedures. Having read all of the responses here I was scared to death to take SuPrep but my experience wasn't very bad at all (I understand that reactions vary). This was my first colonoscopy (I am 44) so I have nothing to compare it to but the SuPrep sounded much better than drinking a gallon of chalky substance.

My procedure was at 1:00 PM today.

The SuPrep was a clear liquid with no visual crystals or residue and actually didn't taste too bad (grape flavored). I chugged the 16 ounces (no straw) and then followed up with another 16 ounces of water. I then took the remaining 16 ounces of water over the next hour. I took my first bottle at 5:00 PM the night before and within 30 minutes I was on the toilet and remained there for the next 3 hours. Just get a good magazine/book and the time just flies! :-)

Everything stopped moving and I was able to get sleep from around 11:00 PM to around 6:00 AM. I had to take the second SuPrep 16 ounces at 8:00 AM followed by the same 32 ounces of water. On the toilet then, off and on, for the next 3 or so hours. No cramping or pain whatsoever.

I had both an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy but I was completely sedated using Propofol so the procedure was completely painless (obviously). Some gas pain post-procedure but now I'm resting at home.

All in all I thought the SuPrep worked well but I definitely wouldn't say the entire thing was enjoyable but, for me, it wasn't the nightmare some have reported.

Good luck!

I Goggled Suprep and found this forum the day before my colonoscopy and prep because I wanted to hear more about the experience. There's mixed reactions here due to individual differences in tolerances to the medicine and levels of inconvenience. My advice to most readers is relax and follow the directions your Doctor gave you and the directions on the box. You shouldn't have any problems. I didn't eat certain foods for 10 days prior, then stopped all but clear liquids recommended 1 day prior, then took the Supra with plenty of water as recommended. I drank the first dose at 5 PM yesterday and was realizing results by 5:15 PM! Over the next few hours I went to bathroom regularly. No problem going to bed at regular time, but it was a drag getting up at 3:50 AM to take the second dose at 4 AM. That worked just as well. The colonoscopy went well. No polyps or any problems. The doctor commented how clean my colon looked. Good job Supra!
I'm over 50 with a history of cancer in my family so I was scared of what a colonoscopy would find. Before the procedure I prayed asking God for peace about the whole thing. He blessed me with a great team of medical professionals and gave me a comfort before and after the procedure that I know I wouldn't have had if I had not of prayed and trusted Him with the situation.

I got freaked out reading some of these posts and I think that apprehension is the hardest part. I got the first dose down without too much gagging. Chilled and drinking with a straw helped. Had no trouble drinking 2 bottles of water right after. It started working in about an hour. I didn't have cramping or anything like that. My biggest complaint is hunger. I do dread taking the second dose but will use mind control again and walking around staying busy with odds and ends. Some of the posts were very helpful. I agreed with the person who said she took a swig of gingerale and it neutralized the aftertaste of the Suprep. Good advice.

I drank my first dose tonight at 3:10 and completed it by 3:20pm. I began cramping at 4pm; chilling at 4:15pm; Vomitting at 4:20 lasted about 15 minutes. I started having movement same time Vomitting kicked in. I saw in a post at beginning that someone mixed with ginger ale, perhaps I will try Sprite for second dose in the morning hope that doesn't cut effectiveness. This is my second colonoscopy ever, next will go back to drinking the gallon mixture as this stuff was horrid!

My first colonoscopy will be Tuesday, December 11. My oncologist just will not shut up about the f***ing colonoscopy so I'm going to go do the damn thing.

(Tiny bit bitter...)

I just last week got my port out after 14 months of breast cancer treatment. I had a REALLY bad first chemo -- SO sick -- I literally couldn't stand up as my body more or less exploded on the bathroom floor -- so I am both alert to these issues and burned out on thinking about them.

I'm telling myself that nothing could be worse than the first chemo and that good planning will pay off, except I have a VERY, ridiculously strong gag reflex.

So here is my plan -- please chime in with your thoughts.

1. Superchill the Suprep with a flat ginger ale. I know that cold goes down when nothing else will.
2. Take a Zofran 30 minutes before each one.
3. Get a fat straw from Panera -- I absolutely love this random, specific and very useful hint. I can drink stuff out of straws, the fatter the better.
4. Have shot glasses with near frozen ginger ale chasers ready.
5. Stop eating any fiber on Thursday.
6. Stop eating anything on Saturday.

I know how to stay close to a bathroom.

I think I'm freaking out about this and so am going into huge control mode because I've been chained to the bathroom such that I couldn't really do anything. I keep telling myself that I will only be chained to the bathroom this time for a few days, but .....I just don't want to go back there.

Just Me, first of all, I pray that you will beat your cancer. If you can survive that, you can survive anything.
Secondly, if you have a strong gag reflex, why wouldn't they prescribe the pills for you instead? (although they are very large pills, as I have taken both preps). If you are over 60 or have renal insufficiency, the pills would not be an option. Ginger is a good idea, as it lessens nausea, as is the Zofran. The most important issue, I think, is your size. If you are a small, low weight person, one bottle should be sufficient to clean you out. But check with your doctor on that. One size does NOT fit all when it comes to drugs/medications. They always seem to forget that. Good luck., and you are wise to listen to your doctor and do the colonoscopy.

I believe I read that Suprep is contraindicated in people with renal insufficiency. There has to be another way to "clean" someone out for a colonoscopy. Suprep is horrid, and I, with no major health issues, was made very sick by it.

I was very ill as well. (during the prep and in the hours after it) It contains an an artificial sweetener, which , if one is sensitive to it, can wreak havoc with one's system. I agree. The colonoscopy was a piece of cake. The prep was not.

Horrid! And finally after finding someone who says grape dimetapp. I am going to apologize to my children for forcing them to ever take it. After throwing up and a migraine from the stress it's 45 min til dose 2. Ugh ..

Just wanted to update that Day 2 was better than day one I did mix the Suprep with Sprite instead of water I also took a drink of water before I would take a drink of the Suprep this made it easier to swallow and I was not nauseated nor did I throw up. I recommend for what my opinion is worth try mixing with Sprite in lieu of water if you like Sprite - still not the best but much more tolerable than the first round. Good luck to all my fellow preppers.

Please....Not everyone has a bad experience with Suprep.
If this is your first experience with Suprep and are reading this thread before starting, don't be afraid!!! I am the biggest whimp around and it was super easy and worked well. I followed some of the suggestions earlier in this thread, which really helped. I had no side effects at all.
If I would've read all this negativity before my prep, I would have been scared to death..........

I agree with "healthy". I'm a big wuss when it comes to tasting anything icky and this didn't bother me. I can't imagine that it has a massive amount of sucralose or other sugar (artificial or otherwise) in it because I have reactive hypoglycemia and would have definitely felt a blood sugar spike and a subsequent drop.

Yes, I used this recently and I suggest you drink both bottles the night before your procedure.

The key is if you are allergic to the sweetener or not. , not how much is in it. Also, if you read "Over Dose", written by a physician, Jay S. Cohen, he states that dosages are based on a 175 pound man. Unless you are that size, it may affect you differently than it would a 110 pound woman. Another thing to consider is if you are gluten sensitive. You metabolize things differently,. Commonsense would tell us that not everyone reacts the same to ANYTHING, whether it's a food, a beverage, or a drug.

I used this product for the first time and everything when relatively easy, but; I read quite a few experiences from the website and took the best. Here is what I did:

Had some chicken broth before I began and a pepcid.
Mixed it with a straw and placed the straw way back in my throat. Chilled the potion first.
Immediately, put Peppermint extract on my tongue
Drank Chicken Broth ~ before I drink potion.
Followed the "potion" with Peach (white) cranberry juice
Ate Jello
Cottonelle with Aloe - TP
Prep H - towelets.
Gatorade.
I did eat very light 2 days before the Prep and I am sure that helped.

Thanks for everyones input, it was great advice.
