Sulfamethtrimethoprim Rash (Top voted first)
UpdatedWas prescribed sulfameth/trimethoprim 800/160 for infection in thumb. Was to take it for 10 days but on 8 day developed an itchy rash - should I continue to take it. I am not allergic to any medications. Can I take benadryl to help?

Went to doctor and was given a steriod shot and antihistamine pills and cream. Better within 24 hours. Cofirmed that I was having an allergic reaction to sulphur in the antibiotic. Thanks for your response.
No, once you get the itchy rash from this it means that most likely you are allergic to it and things will only get worse if you continue taking it and there is the risk of your developing much more dangerous reactions.

Benadryl may help in the meantime, until it starts to clear up, if it's safe for you to take it. But you also need to contact your doctor and let them know, they may wish to prescribe an alternative antibiotic.

I had this happen to me early in 2012, I developed the rash and hives at 9 and a half days in and it was miserable. It took several weeks for it to go away.
How severe is it? You may also need a topical cream or ointment of some type.
