my doctor has told me to take two of the sulfamethoxazole-tmp twice a day, and I'm really feeling sick since I've taken the second one, is this not an awful high dosage to be taken. ## The dose of Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim largely depends on the type of infection you have and how severe it is. However, these pills you have marked "IP 272" are regarded as "double-strength tablets". For most infections, I found that the dosing schedule was one double strength tablet (800mg/160mg) every 12 hours for roughly 7-10 days; so if you feel like you're taking too much, I would suggest contacting your doctor about this concern. Some of these antibiotics have very harsh side effects and I don't blame anyone for wanting get off of them as soon as possible. ## I a...

what is it and what is the strenth ## Hi jenn, Is there any chance you may have meant to say ip 271 as opposed to ip 231? I cannot locate a match for '231', but '271' fits your vague description of the pill. It is a white round tablet with "IP" sitting above "271" on the same side of the pill, separated by a score line. If this sounds like a possible match, then the pill you have is identified as Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim 400 mg / 80 mg; which is a sulfonamide antibacterial combination that is used in the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections. Learn More: Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim Details I hope this helps! Please post back if you have any questions or concerns about this being your pill.

Can smz/tmp tab treat mouth sores ## Hi Linda, This question has an interesting response because Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim can actually cause sores, ulcers, or white spots in the mouth or on the lips, as a rare but possible side effect. If these mouth sores that you're describing are related to an infection, I can confirm that this medication is also used for treatment of both tooth and gum infections; although it does not specify if mouth sores are included in this category of treatment. If I were in your shoes I would consider trying clove essential oil for any dental or mouth related infections or sores. There are also a good number of natural home remedies which you can find online, if these are identified as canker sores. Please post back with any additional information s...
