Sulfamethoxazole Tmp Ds Medication

I have a second degree burn on the back of my arm mid-way between the elbow and wrist that is about 6" by 2" from falling into a wood burning stove after triping over a small dog. I have no blisters, minor swelling, minor drainage, no temperate (98.5), and the wound is slightly pink around the edges. Is this an appropriate anti-biotic to take if there are signs of infection? I've had good results with it in the past.

Hi Barbara,

I'm glad your burn hasn't become infected and isn't causing any sever issues. Based on my research, SMZ-TMP DS oral is a combination of two antibiotics: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections (such as middle ear, urine, respiratory, and intestinal infections).

I have heard of others using this for skin infections, and since you have had luck with it in the past, I think it would be appropriate to use if an infection occurs.

Have you tried using tea tree oil or aloe vera? Aloe Vera should help soothe the burn and Tea Tree oil's anti-septic/anti-bacterial properties might help keep an infection at bay.
