Sulfameth Trimethoprim 800 Side Effects

My daughter is 5 years old and has urinary reflux stage 3. She has been taking sulfameth-trimeth since she was 2 years old. She always has breakthrough infections. My question is what are the long term side effects of her taking the medication for so long and is it necessary? I'm afraid it might be causing more damage than good to her little body.

To be completely honest, I'd also be concerned, Sulfamethoxazole with Trimethoprim can cause some nasty problems in a lot of people that take it. Having taken it just once recently for an infection, I'll never take it again.

As to possible long term effects, it may cause kidney, or liver damage, though it is not common.

There are other antibiotic options that may be safer.

Has surgery been recommended yet for your daughter? Is she seeing a pediatric urologist? My granddaughter had the same condition in both and was on sulfa for several months and then had surgery. She is now 17 and all has been well since then.
