Sulfameth Trimethoprim 800 160 Tabs For Sinus Infections?

Can you use this medicine for a sinus infection where you are bringing up green phlegm?

Sulfamethoxazole with Trimethoprim, the active ingredients in Bactrim, is an antibiotic that can be used to treat many types of infections.

Common side effects may include: nausea, drowsiness, skin rash and diarrhea.

However, if this is medication that you had left over, because you didn't finish it all to treat some other infection that it was prescribed for, you should know that it is never a good idea to do that. It creates the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria.

A partial prescription of left over medications is probably not going to be enough to provide you with a full course of the antibiotic for this infection. Thus, you should really see a doctor.

2 years ago I has a UTI & was precribed sulfameth/trimethoprine 800 mgs. Worked in just 1 day, but I took it for 3. I still have some & just started a new UTI. Is it safe to take those I have left.

Patricia, the expiration date for oral antibiotics is one year from the date they are filled at your pharmacy, because that is when the container is opened and the pills are placed in another one, so they are exposed to heat and light.

After that year, they begin to gradually lose effectiveness, these ones don't become dangerous, but they will not work as well as they did, when they were new. The problem this creates is the risk of developing antibiotic resistant bacteria.

So, in your case, since they are so old, it is best to dispose of them and see your doctor for a new prescription.
