Sulfameth Trimethoprim 800 / 160 Questions (Top voted first)
UpdatedDrug was prescribed yesterday for a UTI which began yesterdat. Symptoms seemed to be lessening yesterday evening after the 2nd tablet. Time between urinating had stretched to 2 hours. Now, this morning it's back to 15 minute intervals before an overwhelming urge to urinate takes place. When urinating, there is also a bad burning sensation. Questions: (1) How long at 2 tablets per day before I experience some relief? (2) Caution against taking with grapefruit juice, but not orange juice. Why? Is there a connection with vitamin C, since I have been taking ~8 grams per day( I now have discontinued C in case there was. (3) 800 of what and 160 of what?

It is 800mgs of Sulfamethoxazole and 160mgs of Trimethoprim, this is an antibiotic, a generic for Bactrim.
As to how long it will take, before you start to feel relief, there is no definitive time period, but most people do start to experience results within a few days.
As to the grapefruit juice, no, it has nothing to do with the Vitamin C, there is actually an enzyme specfic to grapefruit that reacts badly with certain medications, which is why the FDA requires that all medications be tested for this and these warnings issues if the reaction is found. So, therefore it isn't even just grapefruit juice, but any form of grapefruit, even the fruit itself.
Some common side effects you may experience with this medication could include: nausea, drowsiness, skin rash and diarrhea.
