Sulfameth Tmp Ds Tab For Treating Osteoarthritis

Updated

I stumbled on a freakish and very happy side effect when I was prescribed this drug for a severe burn on my foot last spring. By the time I finished the last of my prescription, the pain in my arthritic knees had disappeared! The pain had been so bad I was looking up info on the Mayo site to arrange for knee replacement. Thinking I might be losing my mind, I checked the Internet for "arthritis" and "antibiotics" and found the website called roadback.org, which confirmed my discovery! Antibiotics are being used to treat both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, in addition to lyme disease, fibromyalgia and more. My question: Has anyone else had an experience similar to mine?

Wow, that's fantastic, very happy for you.

And I have to say that going by the posts on our site, I think most people have quite the opposite experience. There have been many posts complaining about this medication causing unusual side effects, such as joint and muscle pain, so you are very fortunate.

Have you discussed this aspect of it with your doctor?

I did discuss it with my doctor, who had no explanation for it, but didn't challenge my claim, either. Since I posted on this site, I had a follow-up x-ray on my right knee because, although I still had no pain in it, I was aware of the bones slipping past one another from time to time. I thought perhaps another series of Orthovisc shots in that knee would head off future pain by putting a new layer of lubricant between the bones. My orthopedic surgeon said my knee joint showed no further deterioration over the year since the first x-ray, and he wouldn't do the Orthovisc shots again because he said they're "only for pain." I was disappointed, because it was pain I was trying to avoid!

Next week will be one full year since I took the Sulfameth prescription that worked a miracle. I am still pain free - and still thankful!

I have a theory, however. It may be convoluted, but if you're interested in hearing it, let me know.

Jo, we are definitely interested in having you post your theory.

As I said we have many site users that are on this medication and we also have many with arthritic conditions, so you never know what information posted by someone else may be helpful to them in the future.

OK. Here goes. And you'll be surprised at the life event that caused me to rethink the arthritic joint situation!

Since the onset of painful arthritis in my knees, I accepted what I believed was the order of the progression of my condition as follows:
1. The cartilage disintegrated, causing the bones to rub together.
2. The bones rubbing together caused them to deteriorate and break apart.
3. This deterioration ultimately resulted in the inflammation that caused the severe pain.
4. The continued damage to the bones, causing continued inflammation and pain, eventually would necessitate knee replacement.

So what happened to make me reassess this process?

About six weeks ago, I had to have a root canal in a tooth that already had been capped. Horrific pain seemed to come out of nowhere, and I had to take an antibiotic to clear up the inflammation before my root canal could be done. My dentist showed me x-rays of my jaw where the dead root in that tooth had already caused the destruction of some of my jawbone and surrounding tissue. So the inflammation was treated, I had my root canal, and this story had a happy ending.

So back to my knees. What if, based on my root canal experience, the order of events relative to my knees was more appropriately like this?

1. The cartilage deteriorated, (rotting tissue?) setting up an inflammation in the entire site.

2. The inflammation caused by the deteriorating cartilage began the process of destroying bone and possibly tissue at the site of the joint.

3. The resulting pain from the untreated inflammation continued after the Orthovisc injections had served only to lubricate the joint without treating the cause.

4. The bone deterioration would have continued, along with the pain, if the inflammation itself had not been treated. The inflammation, I believe, was not a 'symptom' of the damage, but was actually the 'cause' of the damage!

If I hadn't accidentally burned myself and been prescribed Sulfameth for the infection, by now I would have had to have at least one knee replaced. Surely the condition of my knee joint would have deteriorated in a year, but recent x-rays show no change.

As I said in an earlier posting, I realize this may be convoluted thinking, but what if - just what if there was some merit in it?
