Sudden Extreme Low Blood Pressure On Lisinopril
(Newest replies first)

Updated

My friend has been taking 20 mg lisinopril for about 3 years now. About 9 months ago during/after exercise, she began feeling really dizzy and faint to the point of passing out. She took her blood pressure and discovered it was extremely low each time it happened (e.g., 98/55, etc.). She stops taking the meds for 2-3 days, but feels faint and really awful for at least 2 to 3 days. I keep telling her to tell her doctor. How concerned should she be?

I was on atenolol 25mg but didn't like the fact that it made me so tired. After taking 12.5mg for about a week, my dr. switched me to lisinopril 10mg. This caused lightheadedness, and my BP was 106/59 in her office. That might be ok for a younger person, but obviously not for me. So after 4 days on 10mg, she cut the dose to 5mg. I worked the last 3 days and each day I felt lightheaded. Yesterday my BP was 95/68. This morning it was 104/77. I am not going to take the lisinopril today, and will check my BP regularly. I also have a headache nearly all the time. I'm to return to the Dr in 4 days for a BP check and will discuss all of this then. I'm really starting to question whether I ever really had high blood pressure at all.

I was put on Lisinopril last week 10 mg. Now my BP is running 90/70ish. This morning it was 88/67. I did a ballet exercise class yesterday and was very lightheaded. I am wondering if my high BP was due to the fact that I was taking Licorice Root DGL for a stomach ulcer. Any how, wondering about this low BP. Any thots? I am 50 and in decent shape, exercise 5 days per week+.

Concerning lisinopril and low blood pressure, should I discontinue lisinopril for one day to see if my blood pressure returns to normal?

I have been on Lisinopril 40mg for four years. My BP went low to 100-58. I went to 10 mg twice a day. Also took Hydrocodone maybe One a day and Alprazolam 0.5 at night. B P went to 98-55 I stopped the Hydrocodone and still going lower 89-54 I been taking ten mg for two days still the same. Upset stomach and Diahrea. I always had very high B.P. Was diagnosed with second stage renal failure. I am so weak I have trouble doing simple tasks. I am afraid to stop the Lisinopril. Don't want to go back up to 200-99.

I was taking 30MG of lisinopril and my pressure was still high. Dr doubled my dose, next day I was driving and passed out and got in a wreck. Cops arrested me for dwi, and had 0.00 alcohol in my system as I do not drink for medical reasons. Now I have to fight this, really a pain. on top of that when I was arrested I didn't get any medical treatment.

Thank you for your response. My friend has started to stop taking her medication the day she is going to exercise and does not take it the next day either. The faintness and sudden low blood pressure have ceased. I'm still trying to get her in to talk to her doctor. I think she thinks she has taken care of the problem herself now.

I was prescribed Lisinopril (20mgs) when my insurance company would no longer cover my Accupril. Lisinopril also caused me to faint not just once but 4 times in a row. It wasn't a simple faint. Even with reducing the medication to 5 mgs I still had lightedness and dizziness. I walk fast and regularly each day then add cycling from May through October. I have not been able to walk each day since starting this med due to extreme fatigue and other side effects. It also caused my right foot to numb up twice which is also a side effect. I stopped the med yesterday. See your doctor!!!

Well, she should definitely see her doctor, because there are several possibilities of what could be causing the problem and she does need to find out which one it is, so they can remedy the situation.

The first possibility is that diet and exercise are keeping her blood pressure low enough, that she no longer needs the medication. 2 to 3 day isn't long enough for the medication to be processed out of her body and stop having an effect on her, so if is being caused by the medication, stopping it for the brief of a period isn't going to help.

The second possibility is dehydration, if she is exercising regularly and not taking in enough fluids, that will also cause her blood pressure to drop low. It causes Orthostatic Hypotension, which also explain why it's happening during or after exercise, because it happens with sudden movement, when someone stands or sits up too fast.

98/55 really isn't extremely low, it is actually a good reading. The problem, however, arises, when someone is used to running with higher numbers and suddenly drops to that, it can make them feel very dizzy, drowsy and rundown.

Regardless of the top number, I've noticed that whenever my diastolic drops to 65 or below, I experience the same symptoms she's having.
