Substitute For Drixoral (Page 6)

Updated

Are any of the meds with same formula as Drixoral available anywhere? (Desihist SA, Dexaphen SA, Dexophed, Disobrom, Disophrol, Dixaphedrine, Drexophed SR, Drixomed, Drixoral, Duomine) Is the effect of Brompheniramine Maleate the same as Dexbrompheniramine Maleate? If so perhaps, Lodrane D-24 will work. Has anyone tried it yet? I'm fighting nausea, popping ears & wheezing while waiting for my pharmacy to get some. I'm so relieved to find I am not alone in only finding relief with Drixoral. Over the years, especially recently, I have tried others, but none do the job. Anyone having success with a substitute?

Final comment from me. I just spoke to S-P again, and they say that yes, their Canada branch is making Drixoral, so you can buy the real stuff online. www.canadadrugs.com has a good rep. It's about $2 per pill.

My pharmacist told me to take sudephedrine in combination with chlor-trimeton, and it seems to work just as good as Drixoral for me...

I went to the site GlobalDrugsDirect and ordered 60 tablets for $47.00 with a $10.00 shipping charge. I hope to receive them within a week. Drixoral was the only drug that works for me.

I have suffered from a form of disequalibrium since I was 3 years old. Drixoral is the only drug that keeps me from being so sick that I cannot work....I have ordered and used the generic drug from Turkey. Since it is 1/2 of the dose, it isn't quite as effective, but I'm getting by. Wow, I had no idea there were so many people who needed this drug....if anyone has luck with any other drugs, please write!

I also moaned when Drixoral was taken off the market. However, while traveling in Canada, we found it available there in most stores. I have not tried to order any from Canada, but I plan to as nothing else works for me.

I'm new to this site and do not have time to read all the post right now but I'm very glad to see that I'm not the only one in the world that needs Drixoral. I have tried everything else and nothing seems to work.

Someone posted that it will be back on the market in a year right? Is there an update on that?

I'm tired of giving all these other Co. my money on their junk that does not work. I feel like I'm getting robbed everytime and they also cost a lot more than Drixoral did.

Each dose of Drixoral would get me through 2 days at a time and one box of Drixoral would get me through a full year. Everything else cannot even give me a few hours of relief.

There are way too many people that are saying the samething we are. I cannot believe that something has not been done about this yet.

I am relieved to know I'm not the only one that relies on drixoral. I have tried everything else and nothing works. I have terrible nausea without it....must be an inner ear thing. Thank goodness we can still order it from canada. I am currently out and awaiting the shipment in the mail. I has taken over 2 weeks! I hope they start selling it in the US again soon.

Only place which could help me in clearing my sinus a without burning my pocket too hard. It was Drixoral. Shipping is the cheapest only 6.99 USD! havent found that anywhere. They always have drixoral and other allergy medicines in stock. Excellent customer service reps. My shipping came in only 5 business days and I never had to wait for over 2 weeks. I have been personally buying for over a year from them. But I did notice most of these online pharmacies from Canada have good prices. Just my two words here for people and I hope it helps as it helped me. Best of Luck.

I just received an order from canadapharmacy of 60 tablets for $35 and $5 shipping.
It is the Turkish version, made by Schering and the exact formulation of Drixoral.
Hallelujah!

Why is everybody naïvely accepting Schering Plough's claim that Drixoral will soon return (even though S-P has repeatedly pushed back their estimated dates)? Honestly, when was the last time a medicine was suddenly/quietly removed from the market for years due to a manufacturing plant relocation? NEVER.

And yet Canadians still obtain it and now gouge Americans after quadrupling prices overnight, while FDA thugs will doubtlessly try to block importations. Just thank SP's profit motive (it was already winding down the product cycle and ceased advertising) and the FDA's totalitarian efforts to deprive Americans of their health care rights (forcing Drixoral's removal from OTC). You're all just watching helplessly as SP continues to push back the supposed plant reopening date, while the remaining pills skyrocket in price in Canada and knock-off versions flood the black market.

On the bright side, there have been fewer panicked postings here lately as ex-diehard Drixoral customers have apparently started using various alternatives. Please continue to post your replacement drugs/combos here, so we know which treatments have the best chance of success now that Drixoral will probably never be available in local pharmacies ever again.

I have taken Drixoral for many years, but I only took it when I really needed it for sinus drainage, etc. I KNOW I am not addicted to it, but nothing else that is on the market today even compares to the results I had taking Drixoral. Sure would like to know when it will be available again.

Susy - I think you should have at least 90 days to call your bank or credit card company and dispute the charge. Just call them and say that you never received the product and they will promptly refund the money back to your credit card. If you paid by money order or western union, however, then unfortunately there's not really anything you can do.

I'm another Drixoral fan. Most antihistamines make me hyper, but the Dexbropheniramine Maleate wasn't as bad as the others, and the 12 hour formulation meant that the antihistamine effect lasted much longer than the nervousness. If I took a pill at noon, I could still go to sleep that night.

For those who have ordered from Canadian pharmacies, did you have to get a doctor's prescription? I've just looked at a couple of places, and they required one.

I have Lupus and Drixoral has been the only thing keeping me from getting chronic respiratory infections and having to take antibiotics often - it also seems to help with the Lupus inflammation. I started buy Drixoral from Canada as soon as they sent it behind the counter in the US - because of my health, I needed to buy larger quantities so I didn't have to go to the store as often. I have researched 9 Canadian pharamcies, price-shopping, and ordered from about 5. The only one I had a problem with was canadamedicineshop.com - they sent me pills made in England that were a different color and the writing on the package was in another language with no English. I sent them back and will not use that pharmacy again. Trumedcanada.com is the one I use now - 1.1875 per pill for the old faithful green Drixoral Cold/Sinus 12 hr. You can only order 120 at a time, but you can go in immediately and place a 2nd order for 120 (I have to be efficient in everything I do because of my Lupus). I don't usually post, but so many of you are like me and nothing else works the same, I wanted to help you.

Well, it's now March 2010, and I just got off the phone with Schering-Plough/Merck again.

The lady I spoke with said that as of Feb. 15, they have no firm date for the return of Drixoral. She assured me that they were going to start making it again in the same formulation. She said their new manufacturing facility is complete, and they are currently waiting for the FDA to do all their approvals.

She had no explanation for the disappearance of all similar drugs from the shelves since then. I have never seen any of them, and CVS couldn't even find Lodrane in their database.

I think I have connected some dots, though. I did some more looking after reading the last post.

Drixoral was made at Actavis Totowa. You may remember the recall of an entire lot of Digitek a while back, which was twice the normal thickness. That was also made at Actavis Totowa. Here is some interesting reading (you only get a paragraph or two without subscribing, but it's enough):

Actavis Totowa nets warning for QC, cleaning validation: http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-162103856.html

A Federal lawsuit... charges pharmaceutical company Actavis Totowa with manufacturing and distributing defective Digitek heart drug pills...: http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-183812064.html

The US Food and Drug Administration... awaits the court's entry of a permanent injunction that bars Actavis Totowa... from manufacturing and distributing drugs at the firm's Totowa, New Jersey, facilities: http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-192079053.html

It appears that Drixoral disappeared from the market without warning because the facility that manufactured it was breaking a large number of required safeguards, and had just released for sale a deathly-defective lot of Digitek. The lawsuit concerning the Digitek was filed in mid-July 2008 -- at the same time the shelves were running dry of Drixoral. As shown by the previous poster, even the Drixoral was recalled.

My last box was from this recall, but I had already taken one or two by the time I read the previous post last year. No ill effects, so I continued to use it until it was gone. I used it only when I was non-functional, so I was able to stretch it out quite a while. This box was bought in July 2008, the last box I could find anywhere. I had another box I had just started, and I began meting them out with an eyedropper. My last box expired in April 2009, but I made them last into December. By the time I took the last two, they were apparently too old, and did not work.

I am now out of it. Buying it from Canada is prohibitively expensive. Chlorpheniramine maleate helps sometimes, but I usually have to take a couple of doses a bit early in order to gain control. Sometimes, like today, it does not help at all.

Now that I have found this information, I understand. If they had told us what was going on in the first place, I think most people could have handled the whole story reasonably well... much better than the way they mostly kept us in the dark (we're moving our manufacturing, supposed to be out again around the start of 2010, no, no more info than that, here, sign up for notification). They would have been able to look like they were trying to protect the public from a manufacturer that refused to bring their facility into compliance, rather than an uncaring, big corporation that capriciously toys with the health of its customers.

I actually called them back and told the lady I got this time what all I had learned, and that I knew she wasn't the one who decided to keep us all in the dark, but that I hoped she could pass this on to whoever ... that most people are reasonable, and could have handled more information better than the tiny amount we've had all this time.

Here's hoping their new facility gets through the FDA soon!

Thank you so much Miss M for posting your detailed findings! I suppose this is the true power of the internet today - the sharing of knowledge! But seriously, I really appreciate the fact that you took the time to share this with everyone. Now myself and many others will not feel so left in the dark!

Thank you, Roy! You're right, the internet is a wonderful tool! I'm so glad somebody saw my post and benefited from it... that's what I was hoping for. :)

I copied and posted it in several different places, hoping to reach as many people as I could.

I ended up receiving Disophrol, made in Germany, by Schering-Plough. Same as Drixoral, same mfg., just the foreign name. Cost: 0.60 cents per tablet.
