Substitute For Drixoral (Page 5)

Are any of the meds with same formula as Drixoral available anywhere? (Desihist SA, Dexaphen SA, Dexophed, Disobrom, Disophrol, Dixaphedrine, Drexophed SR, Drixomed, Drixoral, Duomine) Is the effect of Brompheniramine Maleate the same as Dexbrompheniramine Maleate? If so perhaps, Lodrane D-24 will work. Has anyone tried it yet? I'm fighting nausea, popping ears & wheezing while waiting for my pharmacy to get some. I'm so relieved to find I am not alone in only finding relief with Drixoral. Over the years, especially recently, I have tried others, but none do the job. Anyone having success with a substitute?
The unavailability of Drixoral in the U.S. and the recent price increase (from $11USD to $39USD/ 20 pack, this month) is due to the U.S. Federal Drug Administration and the current political administration's desire to halt the import of drugs from Canada. The ostensible reasons given are the temporary closure of the U.S. manufacturing facility and the conversion of the active ingredient psudoephedrine sulfate to methamphedamine. Closure of the manufacturing plant doesn't address the continuing availabliity of the drug from Canada and can be dismissed. The possible conversion of psudoephedrine to methamphedamine appears more substantive, but on analysis seems more related to the prohibition of nail clippers on airlines as an anti-terrorism measure than an effective illegal drug countermeasure. The primary reason for the current situation with Drixoral is the pharmaceutical industry's weighty influence on current political administration policy. When (or if) the new Schering-Plough manufacturing facility resumes production, don't expect Drixoral to contain the same active ingredients that it currently has, and don't expect the availability through Canadian sources, even at exorbitant and escalating prices, to continue.
My pharmacist told me that Chlortabs would work. That is the name of the Equate brand from Wal-Mart. It has the sister drug to drixoral called Chlorpheniramine Maleate. They only last for 4 hours. That is the only thing that comes close to Drixoral for me. Hope this helps
I can't believe Schering-Plough placed all the faithful users of Drixoral in such a predicament!
I read the company is moving and they need at least one year to get Drixoral back on the market.
Shame on this corporation for not making enough Drixoral to keep the medication stocked on the shelves while they sort out the move!
I question the CEO Fred Hassan judgement! Mr. Hassan poor insight has now taken the very best allergy medication off the market for at least one year. Yes...thank you sooo much Freddy boy for letting the faithful Drixoral consumers suffer for at least one full year! Sheesh!
Fred Hassan CEO of Schering-Plough aka IDIOT!
Thanks for the heads-up. I bought 3 boxes for 11.99 each just a few weeks ago & thought I would be able to order more at that price. Now it is listing for 46.99 a box. Unbelievable! Guess I better make what I have on hand last as long as possible.
Price in Canada is now 46.00 per box of 20! I personally cannot spend that so am back at square one again. My last order in July was as 13.00 for the same size box. I am really upset about this. I thought my problem had been solved but not so.
Have you checked the Canadian pharmacy websites and noticed that the prices have tripled this week?
I haven't been able to find anything that works for my allergies. Has anyone spoken to their physician about a substitute.
Guys, it's been mentioned several times already. The best (better, imo) replacement for Drixoral is Lodrane, or Lodrane D if you want it with the nasal decongestant. 24 hours. 1 or 2 pills if your allergies are bad. Perfect for someone like me that needs to be on something every day (I take one), but when things get rough, I can ramp up to 2 if necessary.
As others, nothing else worked for me - Zyrtec, Allegra, Claritin, et al. Only Drixoral was effective. 2 Lodranes are actually more effective than Drixoral, at least for me.
Only difference is it's prescription, but check it out, may not be as expensive as going through hoops to get from Canada (or India...I tried).
My allergy dr. had samples that she gave me, so have not paid for Rx yet, let's see how much it costs. Doesn't matter, I will gladly pay to have this kind of relief.
And for those who think they are owed something or even sillier, want to start a class action because a company moved it's manufacturing plant? GOOD LUCK WITH THAT.
Hope you don't get counter sued for a frivolous lawsuit. Good grief.
I am also looking for something to replace Drixoral. I've tried prescriptions and everything else and this was the only MED that worked and did not cause me any side affects. I'll be looking forward to any answers too.
My order arrived from Canada and although it's the cold and sinus formula, it works! So happy to finally have some relief from my summer allergies. To anyone hesitating about ordering from Canada, I would say..go for it.
I finally broke down and ordered some from a Canadian Drug company. It was around $37 for three boxes of 10 each. The boxes look a little different and I've only taken one so far so I'll see how it goes. It is a relief, however, to be able to get it SOMEWHERE!! I take it for prevention of migraines and even at the price I spent, it is way cheaper than Imitrex!
My Drixoral from Canada only took about 6 days from order to delivery. What a relief! I
Wow! So glad to know I'm not going crazy. Drixoral is my only salvation, and I have been fighting severe drowsiness for the last month while I try to adjust to Zyrtec...then I can't sleep at night! Not good. I just placed an order from a Canadian online pharmacy, too, and am SO glad to know that these will be the same round green pills as I've used in the past. I cannot wait to feel NORMAL again! Gee, and I could even buy 3 at a time, instead of the limit of 1 imposed in this country a while back. Thanks to everyone for your comments and informative help.
I also am lost without Drixoral. I have tried all other options w/o sucess. I guess we will all suffer for 1 year, how unfortunate.
Brenda, the pills I got today are the same exact green ones I have always used. I got them from canadadrugs dot com.
I am so relieved to find this med is still available, even if you have to jump thru hoops! I take it for seasonal allergies year round and it also HELPS MY MS. when my system is all 'irritated' by an allergy it attacks me as well and I've been lightheaded, falling, and exhausted while my body wages war. I plan on ordering next thing! Thanks
Thanks, Dak, for the explanation. I did order, and am waiting impatiently for it to arrive. lol
Schering Plough has a manufacturing plant in Canada which is not shut down or relocating. That's why it's available in Canada. Drugs manufactured in Canada must be purchased in Canada. Drixoral is still a viable product. It's just that the U. S.manufacturing plant is being relocated (probably under a new management and supervison). That change won't take place until the first of the year. In the meantime, if you need Drixoral - buy from Canada.
I don't get why, if the manufacturing plant is temporarily closed, they're still able to get it in Canada. When I talked to the pharmacist up there, she said they are still able to get it, haven't had any troubles with reorder and haven't been notified of discontinuation.
I called SP and got the same response about the plant moving. When I asked from where to where, the CSR couldn't answer.
This so much BS. I don't understand why us Drixies can't get a straight answer! I emailed and got this reply:
Thank you for writing the Division of Drug Information, in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
Drixoral is still listed as a currently marketed drug product. I do not have information that the company has discontinued their marketing of the drug.
Best regards,
