Substitute For Drixoral (Page 2) (Top voted first)

Updated

Are any of the meds with same formula as Drixoral available anywhere? (Desihist SA, Dexaphen SA, Dexophed, Disobrom, Disophrol, Dixaphedrine, Drexophed SR, Drixomed, Drixoral, Duomine) Is the effect of Brompheniramine Maleate the same as Dexbrompheniramine Maleate? If so perhaps, Lodrane D-24 will work. Has anyone tried it yet? I'm fighting nausea, popping ears & wheezing while waiting for my pharmacy to get some. I'm so relieved to find I am not alone in only finding relief with Drixoral. Over the years, especially recently, I have tried others, but none do the job. Anyone having success with a substitute?

Sandy, thanks for the info but when I looked up London Drugs online and submitted Drixoral the reply was that this is not available for online sales. I have been using Drixoral for many years and before that Chlor-Trimeton. Responses on this site including my own, sound desperate. We all sound like we are addicted and need it for our fix. Has it occured to anyone that maybe it has been withdrawn from the market for another reason. I really am beginning to wonder. Has this medication contributed to our inability for anything else to work and made us all addicted to something we can no longer buy. A year or more ago this company took Drixoral off the market for several months as they said they were reformulating the medication and now it's off again but for even longer. Am I being too suspicious for nothing or has anyone else thought this situation is rather strange? I've never heard of a drug company taking off medication for a year because they were moving their place of operation.

I can't believe this! I thought I was the only one. I'm not addicted-I only take it when needed, not every day. I can find a decongestant , but I can't find an antihistamine that works (other than the one in Drixoral) that doesn't give me a headache. I think it's all a conspiracy to get us to switch to the new, expensive formulas. lol

Where has Drixoral gone?? I am another faithful user of it for relief of my allergies. It's cheap and works well. I can't wait until it's back on the market. Thanks for the updates.

Like most of you, I have taken Drixoral since the '70's, and have found that it is the only drug that relieved my symptoms. However, I feel that the manufacturer should be accountable to the 'withdrawl' symptoms and suffering I have gone through because they decided to just 'drop me in the dirt,' for whatever reason. I believe that legal action should be available for we consumers who depended on Drixoral, and had no prior notice that it would no longer be available!!!

I just ordered three boxes of Drixoral from a Canadian company. Just google Drixoral and Canada and you will find several. I hope they really do come back in a year, I can't make it without their product!

I have contacted the manufacturers of all of the drugs that you have mentioned, and except for Lodrane, they are all discontinued. Lodrane is made by a very small manufacturer with a limited distribution on the central east coast and is available through prescription only. Not much help. Stick with Canada.

I've been taking Drixoral since it was an Rx - Disophrol. I think my allergies are worse because I'm panicking because I can't get my hands on the stuff anymore. You'd think it was crack or something. Druggist told me to try Alavert non-drowsy. Non-drowsy alright. I walked the floors last night - couldn't sleep, thought my heart was going to thump out of my chest.

Thanks Gerri. Took your advice and googled Drixoral and Canada. Just ordered 3 boxes myself. A bit pricey compared to what I paid at Wal Mart but do we have a choice??

I googled Drixoral Canada and called and order 60 tablets. They said there was a slight back order - would probably be 7 - 10 days before order is shipped. Paid $46 with shipping. That's not bad. They said that as soon as I receive the order, I can order another 60 tablets. Whoopee! Drixoral rocks! Drixoral lives!

Just want you all to know that the Drixoral that Canada sends is Drixoral Cold and Sinus not Cold and Allergy but it is working perfectly for me.

Thanks for all the feedback. I ordered from Canadian Pharmacy - best price, fastest shipping. I've had hives since I haven't been taking Drixoral. It's ridiculous how much I need it.

Lawsuit!? I think we should complain to our government for stopping the manufacturers of the product because its used in the illegal drug manufacture. It was bad enough to be inconvenienced having to sign for Drixoral and not being able to buy over the counter, but to stop manufacturing it is not acceptable.

This is what I get for not reading all the comments. I just noticed Marcy's comment about the factory being moved. I almost think that's worst. What happened to all the employees why they rebuild? Did they get laid off. Unbelieveable.

Question for BRENDA.
Are the ingredients in the Cold & Sinus formula Dexbrompheniramine + Pseudoephedrine? If no, then that would not be the same as the Cold & Allergy formula we used to get here in the USA. I placed an order with Canada the other day. I want to make sure the Cold & Sinus formula is the same as the Cold & Allergy. Would greatly appreciate a response if you're still reading these comments. Thanks.

I called SP and got the same response about the plant moving. When I asked from where to where, the CSR couldn't answer.
This so much BS. I don't understand why us Drixies can't get a straight answer! I emailed and got this reply:

Thank you for writing the Division of Drug Information, in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

Drixoral is still listed as a currently marketed drug product. I do not have information that the company has discontinued their marketing of the drug.

Best regards,

I don't get why, if the manufacturing plant is temporarily closed, they're still able to get it in Canada. When I talked to the pharmacist up there, she said they are still able to get it, haven't had any troubles with reorder and haven't been notified of discontinuation.

Schering Plough has a manufacturing plant in Canada which is not shut down or relocating. That's why it's available in Canada. Drugs manufactured in Canada must be purchased in Canada. Drixoral is still a viable product. It's just that the U. S.manufacturing plant is being relocated (probably under a new management and supervison). That change won't take place until the first of the year. In the meantime, if you need Drixoral - buy from Canada.
