Substitute For Drixoral
UpdatedAre any of the meds with same formula as Drixoral available anywhere? (Desihist SA, Dexaphen SA, Dexophed, Disobrom, Disophrol, Dixaphedrine, Drexophed SR, Drixomed, Drixoral, Duomine) Is the effect of Brompheniramine Maleate the same as Dexbrompheniramine Maleate? If so perhaps, Lodrane D-24 will work. Has anyone tried it yet? I'm fighting nausea, popping ears & wheezing while waiting for my pharmacy to get some. I'm so relieved to find I am not alone in only finding relief with Drixoral. Over the years, especially recently, I have tried others, but none do the job. Anyone having success with a substitute?
I have not found a subsitute for Drixoral that works either. I was glad to know that I too was not the only person suffering from allergies that only Drixoral seemed to help.
I also have been looking for a replacement for Drixoral. I find that it has been the only drug that has worked for my sinus problems for over 20 years. I contacted the Distributor and they said it will be off the shelves for a year while they set up with a new manufacturer. PLEASE, PLEASE let me know if anyone finds a substitute with the same ingredients!
Lodrane 24D is a great product for relieving runny nose, sneezing, and congestion. It works fairly fast and sedation is minimal. It also has a really good drying effect.
clortrimaton (chlorpheniramine maleate) is pretty good for the antihistimine, but it makes me a bit jittery
Thanks for the info. Drixoral is the best allergy medicine that works for me too. Although, Benedryl allergy & sinus works fairly well, but not as good as Drixoral.
Does anyone know when or if Drixoral will be back on the shelves? Glad I am not the only one who relies on this medication for relief. Is there a comparable substitue?
I too need Drixoral. I tried to order through a Canada and they are unable to get it.
I researched online and found a few drugs that contain the same ingredients. Has anyone tried any of these?
12 Hour Cold
Desihist SA
Dexaphen SA
I spoke with Schering Plough who is the distributor for Drixoral. They have said that they had to find a new manufacturer and that Drixoral will be off the shelves for approx. one year. Once the new mfg is up and running they will restart distribution.
Going to be on the shelves in one year what are we suppose to do until then. I have taken it since in the 60's and nothing works like it has.
I just received my Drixoral from Canada. Two orders from two different on line drug stores. Paid .50 and .99 a pill. Worth the $$, no sinus problems, I feel normal again!!
I too am in need of Drixoral and have used this for over 20 years. It has been the only allergy medicine that gets rid of all my symptoms.
Are the allergy medicines recommended in these replies over the counter or prescription? I have tried Zyrtec and Zyrtec D, Allegra, Claritan D and all over the counters that I know of and none of them worked like Drixoral. Does anyone know a really good option with over-the counter?
Add me to those who can't seem to get by with anything but Drixoral. I have been trying Zyrtec-D but am finding that I am having insomnia issues, and I had tried Sudafed 12 hour a while ago, and it made me totally jittery.
My Allergy Doctor prescribed Drixoral for me in the '70's-virtually nothing has ever worked well for me but Drixoral. We need to form a Consumer's Group--it is ridiculous for the sufferers to have to go thru all this because some drug crazed punks decided to use our med to make their street drugs!!We'd be better off if a prescription was required. In desperation I tried Alavert but only with minor relief.

I've tried everything. Nothing gets rid of the nausea. Mucinex works okay, but still not Drixoral. The Walgreens pharmist said it was taken off the shelves because one of the ingredients is used in making meth. Basically we all have to suffer because of the war on drugs. The pharmasist suggested asking my doctor for a prescription. I haven't tried yet.
I spoke with the manufacturer and it was not taken off the shelves due to drug abuse, it was taken off of the shelf because they are in the process of moving and rebuilding the lab that makes it. They anticipate that it will be back in distribution some time in 2009.
My sister & I are suffering too by the recent disappearance of DRIXORAL....we too have taken it since the 70's & nothing replaces it!!! Yeah, we have to suffer for the bad guys who abuse our legitimate antihistamine/decongestant!!! I have tried everything & haven't found a useful combination yet.......glad to see we're not the only ones disgusted w/pharmaceutical company......
I have found some stilll available through a relative in Canada. There are a few places you can still get them there. Google Canadian Pharmacies. There is also a place called London Drugs in Canada that has them.
Thank God, I am not crazy. Everyone keeps telling me any of the over the counter meds should do the same thing and I tell them No, nothing works like drixoril. My sister says I'm addicted to it since when I stop taking it I get so sick: nausea, dizziness, and just plain sick feeling. I too have been trying other meds and only get minimal relief. It is true that misery loves company because I am glad I am not alone in this. I am a nurse and I have tried several combinations to find relief, nothing has worked so far, so good luck.
Sandy, thanks for the info but when I looked up London Drugs online and submitted Drixoral the reply was that this is not available for online sales. I have been using Drixoral for many years and before that Chlor-Trimeton. Responses on this site including my own, sound desperate. We all sound like we are addicted and need it for our fix. Has it occured to anyone that maybe it has been withdrawn from the market for another reason. I really am beginning to wonder. Has this medication contributed to our inability for anything else to work and made us all addicted to something we can no longer buy. A year or more ago this company took Drixoral off the market for several months as they said they were reformulating the medication and now it's off again but for even longer. Am I being too suspicious for nothing or has anyone else thought this situation is rather strange? I've never heard of a drug company taking off medication for a year because they were moving their place of operation.

Where did you order the Drixoral in Canada from? What is the address?
Yes, Bromfed DM liquid. Nice butterscotch flavor with no nasty after taste. Same ingredients as Drixoral but not as many mg of them. By RX only but worth it. Using it now and seems to work well.
I got my drixoral from Canada every year since it was no longer available in the US, but now it has been discontinued in Canada, I have no idea why. I don't know what I will do come allergy season. It is truly a miracle drug. NOTHING else touches my allergies. Sigh.
I have been looking for drixoral recently, hoping that they had brought it back! Any luck on finding anything for all the itching of eyes and throat and sinus headache?
Uhhh... It is now December 2014 (SIX YEARS LATER!!!) and there has never been any Drixoral anywhere since, in all that time. "One year", my hiney.
New drug coming out (don't get excited, tho), Dixaphedrine, which I was told was made my the "same mfgr" as original Drixoral, and I'm just starting my quest. It's listed on the Kaiser Formulary (if I understood what I was reading), but I can't figure out if it is Rx or OTC. As you recall, Drixoral was OTC, after originally being prescription only. And we all said we wouldn't mind paying for Rx if we could just get RELIEF.
I suggest everyone Google "dexbrompheniramine/pseudoephedrine" and see what you find. It looks like there are several different Drixoral dupes around that aren't advertising themselves, unfortunately with a bunch of dumb sounding names that don't lend themselves to quickly bring recalled.
Good Luck everyone. I will post back when and if I actually get my hands on anything worth shouting about, as Granny used to say. I only wish I could buy a new product that doesn't give my money to the original manufacturer (Schering-Plough?)
the Drixoral formulation is now available as LODRANE OTC by ECR Pharmaceuticals,

My second-best alternative is to take 5mg Zyrtec (I break a 10mg in half) before bed along with 60mg pseudoephedrine, then another 5mg Zyrtec midmorning with or without pseudoephedrine in the am or later in the afternoon.
Not as good as Drixoral, but works without the jitters.
Original Drixoral is available via internet in Canada.
I spoke with the manufacturer Oct 2011--the company will not put it back into production because of the cost, nothing more. They orig took it from stores because of abuse, but now they have other products to fund.
I have "plinking" sensation in my head. It's worst upon arising and quits after about half-hour. I noted that when I take Dimetane, this "plinking" stops. Drixoral will do the same thing. With this "plinking" going on at night (at times) it keeps me awake. Will Children's Dimetapp capsules do the same trick??? I am 75-year old male.
