Stopping Lisinopril (Page 2)

Updated

I have been taking 10 mg/day of Lisinopril for 3 months and have developed a tightening in the chest and flu like symptoms. Within the past 3 weeks I have felt progressively worse and would like to stop. Is it ok to just quit or must I wean myself off?

I have been on lisinopril for over a year. I have dry cough that chocks me almost vomiting. I am weak my hands shake and my neck is stif and jerky. I take 20 mg. along with Itenolol 50-25 for blood pressure. Now my dr. says my sodium is low in my blood. Should be 135 mine is 129. Stopping the lisinopril and take my chances.

I HAVE HAD BURNING MOUTH ALSO BUT WHEN I STOPPED LISINOPRIL IT DID NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE. UNFORTUNATELY I HAVE TRIED EVERY OTHER BP OUT THERE AND THIS IS THE ONLY ONE I CAN TAKE. I STILL
HAVE THE PROBLEM WENT TO A SPECIALIST AND SHE HAS TRIED MOUTHWASHES BUT SO FAR I AM STILL IN PAIN. HAD IT FOR A YEAR.
GETS BETTER THEN GETS WORSE. TERRIBLE!!! I FEEL FOR YOU. WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR YOUR MOUTH PROBLEM?

My husband had open heart surgery for a bad valve in April. He now has a cough so bad he chokes & gags. Coughing til he throws up is very common now. His Dr said its the lisinopril & to deal with it. That he has to stay on bp meds & coughing is fine. They don't live with him & see how bad the coughing is.

Try taking Diovan. It's much better than lisonipril. Lisonipril is made out of pit viper venom.

I'm 53 and on a 5 mg dose, for about 3 years. I developed a cough, no other symptoms of a cold. My doc was on vaca so I saw her back up dr. He asked about the Lisinopril, as did the nurse. I had lost 30 lbs n my BP has been fine for a year. I decided to take myself off w/o contacting the dr. I pretty much never get head aches, now I'm getting pains in my head, I was experiencing dizziness and coordination issues. Those have passed but occation head pain continues. Still haven't told my dr. Guess I should huh?

Hi Scott: have you weaned off of Lisinopril? I'm currently weaning off Toporil, and next I want off of Lisinopril because of all of the side effects...I've been cutting Toporil in half every week, etc

I have been on lisinopril for about 10 years and finally realized some thing that were going on were results of the drug.I have been on 20 mg for about 5 years of that time.I went off cold turkey because I didn't know not too.I have been off for about a week .Will the effects of the drug go away or will they be life long problems and am I in danger from going off cold turkey besides bp.

If in doubt always wean off a medication. Half the dose for a week, then 1/4 it for a week, then 1/4 every other day for a week, then stop.

I have been off the drug for 3 weeks now. The reason I stopped was horrible muscle spasms that are still occuring. This medicine depletes your magnesium. Starting magnesium citrate today hopefully this works

I am in the same boat as you it seems. Been on lisinopril 20mg for 11 years. Cut to 10 mg a few months ago. I am concerned about the long term use liver damage, and also wonder if the weird health issues I have could be from this long term drug.
How are you now that you've stopped taking it? Do you do anything else to help your BP? I k ow I need to exercise, been a couch potato forever. Thanks!

Hello, everyone we are in the same boat I see. I have been on 10mg of Lisinopril for a few years. Last summer I started having a mild cough, that has progressively gotten worse. I feel fine except for that damn cough, it even wakes me like it did last night and last for at least half an hour. They treated me for bronchitis TWICE NOW. The pills helped for a week. No symptoms at all except for that terrible cough. I need to know if it's dangerous to just stop taking it? The cough is so bad that I'm worn out all the time.
Thanks

I was just asked by my primary care to stop taking my 20 mg per day Lisinopril dosage cold turkey, and though concerned about my heart and stroke risk now (I am 59 and not exactly healthy), research online seems to point to her concerns about my kidneys and liver being warranted. Both my potassium and kidney levels have been running very high (and my C reactive protein), and I recently went through back pain similar to a kidney stone attack, but the CT scan showed no stones. Since I do have a cyst on one kidney already, having a drug like Lisinopril potentially causing damage is certainly of concern - but so is high blood pressure.

As for the burning mouth, I find the comments on that interesting since I too have been dealing with on and off ulcers in my mouth, my tongue "burning" and this morning, my lips, mouth and tongue hurt - first 24 hours off the drug.

I also take 50,000 units of Vitamin D (prescription) twice per week for the person who asked someone else, it's due to my malabsorption issues.

Certainly hope we all find some correct, healing and helpful answers. Definitely hope my getting off Lisinopril is the right thing to do. "Getting off of" ... feels like I am a junkie! ;)

Hi Jo, The only side effect I have from just quitting is that I feel a thousand percent better. I still have mild side effects from being on it so long i guess. One guy posted that junk robs your body of zinc so I've been taking that. My joints have stopped hurting also. And i can see out of my right eye much better again, before I couldn't see my hand in front of my face. Yeah that crap turned me into a couch potato also, it's hard to do things when you feel terrible. If I could get enough people together and we all chip in a little, I'd hire a lawyer and sue the hell out of the people that make lisinopril. I hope you get to feeling better.

Thanks Michael, my doctor doesn't want me to be off completely, but I'm going to continue halving my doses and monitoring my BP. I want off! I wonder if my joint pains, systemic inflammation and high liver enzymes are do to this?! I will up my zinc too, thanks. I'm glad you're feeling better, and I strive to be off of lisinopril and feel good as well!

Hi Jo, I just old stopped taking it, no more strange aches and pains. There are other blood pressure medicines out there without snake venom in them. Ask for one of those.
I'm going to use a Chinese cure HAWTHORN, do a search on the net for it and see if you like it. Believe it or not doctors get paid by some companies to push their drug, and that really is a fact! From the research I've done any blood pressure medicine with PRIL on the end of it, is made from snake venom. Brown viper venom from Brazil for this one. From what I found the sides effects can start right away or months down the road like happened to me. My newest side effect before I stopped was I would break out in a cold sweat for no reason. All that crap is gone now, I just hope my eye gets back to normal, one day vision was great I woke the next day and couldn't see. Yak at me all you want OK, and take care.

I am taking myself off as we speak. I began having temporary vision loss in one about 2 months after taking it. I am a 41 year old female who has never had HBP issues and after seeing a doctor for the very first visit ever for my annual check up, she prescribed me lisinopril that same day. I had a 176/108 and due to her concern, I filled the rx and started it that day without really thinking about anything- just trusting the doctor. After many expensive tests - a carotid doppler ultrasound, CT scan, EKG, EEG, MRA and an MRI w and w/out contrast- all coming back normal, I was stumped. I was ready to say good bye to the world thinking I may have a stroke, or like my grandfather suffer from a burst aneurysm. I get so mad thinking back about it now, I was very depressed, having nightmares of dying. With all these tests coming back normal I decided to take matters in my own hands. I am now about 3 days from being completely off Lisinopril and my reading this am was 126/92. I will be seeing my doc ( my new doctor of 6 months, not the one who prescribed me Lisinopril) tomorrow and letting her know what I have done and go from there. I still take an aspirin a day and want to stop this too.

Thanks Michael. I have decided to taper off and try to get BP under control with diet and herbs. I'm tired of feeling tired and achy, and hope once off this, I will gain my health. Hope you're doing well too. Jo
