Stopping Belviq Prior To Surgery

Updated December 9, 2021

I am scheduled to have surgery in August. Do I need to stop taking Belviq prior to surgery? Does Belvíq affect wound healing? If I decide to stop temporarily is there a correct way to go about it? Do I need to taper off?

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, "if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking lorcaserin (Belviq)." - Source: medlineplus.gov/druginfo/meds/a613014.html

So for good measure I think your best bet would probably be to contact your doctor/surgeon for pre, intra and post op instructions, cautions and guidelines as to what's safe and what isn't. Depending on the type of surgery you're having, there may be a list of contraindications you should be aware of. If Belviq was thought to pose a risk, it would then be your doctor's duty to work closely with you on developing a tapering schedule in accordance with the timing of your operation.

Concerning the progress of wound healing, I haven't seen any specific side effects listed that indicate this being a potential problem with Belviq. However there are numerous other possible side effects that this drug could cause which hypothetically speaking, may interfere with the surgery (e.g. agitation, restlessness, excessive tiredness, hallucinations, twitching, etc...)
