Stopped Taking Levothyroxine
UpdatedI was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a few years back and began taking levothyroxine. Although I didn't lose weight, my energy levels did improve and sugar cravings decreased.
However, in the past couple of months I've been experiencing intense hot flashes at night as well as throughout the day, have skipped a period and have been feeling very irritable, moody and depressed. I also developed a really weird and random rash on my upper thigh that wasn't itchy or painful, but lasted for about a month and has still not completely faded. It looks like a birth mark now.
I realize that my symptoms could be perimenopause (I'm 39 yrs old) but I've also read that the side effects of levothyroxine can also cause my symptoms, as can having a thyroid disorder.
I've been so desperate that I stopped taking the levo a week ago. Now I'm feeling cold and have little to no energy and am feeling even more irritable and depressed, plus I have total brain fog.
I have a dr. appt. on Thurs. to discuss the results of my last blood tests, which checked my TSH and T3 and T4 as well as blood glucose levels, so perhaps I'll have some answers then.
I just wondered if anyone else had experienced these symptoms? I'm usually an upbeat, high energy person but haven't felt like myself for awhile now. Thanks in advance or any insight/input.

Yes, unfortunately there are several possibilities as to what might cause such symptoms.
However, it would be unusual to be side effects of the medication, unless your dosage was recently changed to a higher one.

You also may have made them worse, by stopping it abruptly and causing some rebound symptoms.
Have you gotten the results of your blood tests, yet?
