Spiriva Weight Gain Side Effects (Page 8)

I've talked about this problem before concerning the side effects from Spiriva. The only side effect I've experienced was a sudden, and seemingly permanent weight gain. In spite of efforts to lose the weight I've had no success whatsoever. I've gained weight from other medications in the past only to lose it when the medication was discontinued. Not so with Spiriva. It has been almost three years since I've used the inhaler but yet the added weight persists. I should mention that all of the added weight has been on the midsection and nowhere else! To make matters worse has been a disended abdomen to go along with it. I contacted the drug company right after it happened and, naturally, they acted as if it was new to them! I'm not the only one this has happened to. Although a rare side effect it has been a problem for others, the same as mine. This thing is ruining lives, and should be pulled from the market. It won't be though...profits are the name of this terrible game. Bill.

Wow! I very, very seldom experience constipation or the bloating/pain that often accompanies it and, when I do, I know for sure what I've done to cause the problem such as not having enough fiber, water, and/or exercise. I remedy that by taking a fiber supplement, drinking more water, and getting off my butt to exercise. I have also never experienced hardening of the muscles like you describe. However, if you are having those symptoms and are sure they're connected with Spiriva then it's quite possible you're having an adverse reaction to that medication and if you truly do have COPD then you need to switch to a different medication to treat it. Remember, COPD is progress and incurable; however, treatment with medication for COPD will slow down the progression.

I'm on 1200-1500 calories a day - have been for about two years now - and exercise aerobically 20-30 minutes a day four and sometimes five days a week on the treadmill. All I've managed to do is lose a whole 9 lbs. but I've kept that off. However, that's it. Apparently your pharmacist is not on Spiriva. My pharmacist isn't, either, but he has heard the complaints about weight gain from many of his customers who are on Spiriva. My pulmonologist has heard the same from his other patients who are on Spiriva and has even called the drug companies, both the manufacturer and the distributor, about it.

Like many others I have experienced sudden, intensive and prolonged weight gain as a result of using Spiriva.
Extensive blood tests have proven that there is no renal dysfunction, no liver disorder and no heart related reason why the accumulation of fluid is happening.
The weight and body mass increase are alarming, uncomfortable and depressing.
I have now decided to be referred to a private consultant with a view to taking legal action against the prescribing Doctor and the pharmaceutical providing company.

Refer your pulmonologist and pharmacist to this forum. They might just learn something. My pulmonologist did when I referred him to this forum; he asked his other patients on Spiriva about weight gain and when he found that many of them had the same problem he called the drug company. They denied they had ever heard of it despite the fact that many people on this forum had contacted them about it.

I've been on Spiriva for 7 months now. This past month I have gained 25 lbs and all around my waist, but mostly in the front. I hate it.

Same thing here, weight gain of 14 lbs in midssection. Stomache is bloated out and i have never have weight problems.

The exact thing happened to me......was put on Spiriva back in 2006 and in 7 months time I put on 20 lbs all in the mid section...plus the bloating is horrible.
Never had a weight problem in my life until this.

Hello, I have been diagnosed with a diastasis recti,which I relate to the taking of Spiriva.

I have gained so much weight since taking Spiriva, just this past month, 12 pounds. I have serious back issues, and I am scheduled for back surgery next month. Having this distended stomach makes my back pain unbearable.

My weight is all around my midsection. I am a female.

I went to the doctor, yesterday, and no one recognized me as I now look. I felt so ashamed inasmuch as I used to model, so my humiliation was astounding.

Today, I am starting a fruit only diet!

I cannot bear carrying all of this stomach weight around.

I am thinking that the plague of the appearance of a distended stomach, among all of us, may be diastasis recti, caused by the Spiriva.

I would suggest being examined by your doctor for diastasis recti, that is caused by all of the midsection weight gain.

Let all of us grossly affected by Spiriva, start a class-action against Spiriva, to force Spiriva off of the market, and to prevent anyone else from being cursed with the unsightly body one gains as a result of using Spiriva.

My husband used Spiriva for three days, and his abdomen has grown three inches! What is the solution to weight loss? Does anyone know?

Two problems: 1) I don't have enough money to start even a class-action suit and 2) most importantly, if Spiriva is taken off the market I'll either die as I'm allergic to everything else except the steroids and steroids are KNOWN to cause incredible weight gain so that makes no sense at all.

I was prescribed Spiriva in 2016 following a severe chest infection for which I was hospitalized in Dec 2016. By Feb 2017 my breathing ability had improved but my weight gain and abdominal and hip enlargement had increased significantly. I gave up smoking but limited my calorie intake to 1000 per day. I experienced a dress size increment from a size 6/8 to a size 14 in 3 months! In March 2017 I stopped taking Spiriva, the excess weight has not subsided even though I now exercise in excess of 2 hours per day, follow a 1000 cal diet and Fitbit regime. Interestingly I am no longer breathless. I do however still have an inflated stomach and thigh area and feel that every part of my anatomy bar my earlobes, toes and fingers is swollen. I am graduate of Law and hold an LLB together with a Legal Practice Certificate. I have had extensive medical reviews including CAT scans which have revealed that my (privately funded) consultant considered that my condition was due to the prescription of Spiriva. I live in the U.K. and have now reported this drug via the "yellow card" scheme. Should you be interested in joining a not for profit group action against Boehringer Ingelheim I am happy to instigate this.

It sounds interesting, but it's their word against ours. I was a medical transcriptionist for 51 years so I know how doctors and hospitals work. I was also, for about two years during that same 51 years (worked two jobs), a paralegal here in the U.S.A. During that time I have seen many legal suits against doctors, hospitals, and big pharma go nowhere because the plaintiffs have only anecdotal evidence. That is what this is. We have no proof whatsoever that Spiriva causes weight gain, they deny that it does, and there are no lab tests that can prove otherwise.

So, Diane, you really think that anecdotal evidence will be enough? The legal suits against, say, the tobacco companies resulted in a win but that was because cause-and-effect could be proven by medical tests and studies done over a period of decades. That is not the case here as there are no tests that can prove cause-and-effect. In order to get that evidence we'd have to start from scratch - find enough patients who were diagnosed with COPD to be statistically significant, weigh them before starting Spiriva, closely monitor their diets and activity and other medications they may be taking while on Spiriva... That would take decades and at 76 years old I just don't have the time to spare in hopes of receiving any compensation. As I said, it sounds great but is totally impractical.

I was diagnosed with severe emphazeema and my doctor started me on breo. 6 days so far on it. im not sure yet how its working as I had a upper respatory infection also and am on antibiotis also with this meds right now. and have a lot of coughing up crap.

I started taking spiriva and certainly i have gain weight in the middle. I am considering stopping it because gaining the weight makes breathing worse. These companies do not take any side effect into consideration. What a shame
