Spiriva Weight Gain Side Effects (Page 10)
UpdatedI've talked about this problem before concerning the side effects from Spiriva. The only side effect I've experienced was a sudden, and seemingly permanent weight gain. In spite of efforts to lose the weight I've had no success whatsoever. I've gained weight from other medications in the past only to lose it when the medication was discontinued. Not so with Spiriva. It has been almost three years since I've used the inhaler but yet the added weight persists. I should mention that all of the added weight has been on the midsection and nowhere else! To make matters worse has been a disended abdomen to go along with it. I contacted the drug company right after it happened and, naturally, they acted as if it was new to them! I'm not the only one this has happened to. Although a rare side effect it has been a problem for others, the same as mine. This thing is ruining lives, and should be pulled from the market. It won't be though...profits are the name of this terrible game. Bill.
Re: Herb (# 180)
Absolutely 100% wrong! I started that weight gain about two months after I started Spiriva, with no change whatsoever in diet or lifestyle. Furthermore, I take my Spiriva at 10:30 p.m., always have, as that fits with my lifestyle. I go to be shortly thereafter, read until about midnight, and do not wake up in the middle of the night to eat. If Spiriva causes hunger I sure haven't noticed it.
Re: Judith (# 181)
Sorry, that should be go to bed - not just be! Typo.
Re: Herb (# 180)
actually no, I am a strict vegetarian, I do not eat sweets or sugar, I follow a very strict 1200 calorie a day diet, it is not what I eat, I eat very healthy, my blood work comes back clean my only issue is COPD, but I have been on this drug for a long time longer than most since 2011, this is when the weight gain started, and 2-3 pounds a month over 72 months adds up to over 100 pounds, please be a little more considerate as this is a well documented problem on my end, i see my regular practitioner very often as well as a dietitian, this is not just an eating problem, I am one that I have to remind myself to eat kind of a person, this is a weight gain, mainly in the midsection area.
Diane (# 156) --
Diane, I have been on Spirva since 2011 because of COPD I have had a 100 pound weight gain, I have gone from a size 6 to a size 22, I have told doctors, my pulmanologist of the issue, i have been to a dietitian, I have been to the cartiologist, all my labs and test come back fine, I do not have a thyroid issue, i do not have any other issue, My weight gain is well documented from my regular doctor and my pulmonlogist, what steps need to be taken to file a suit? When I contact the drug company they deny ant known effect of the drug,my doctors just say that weight gain is not one of the side effects. I am at a stand still, and people look at me as if I have no control over food, I have now put myself on a 1200 calorie a day diet, but I still gain weight up to 8 pounds a month or more. I do not know what to do.
This medication you’re talking about doesn’t cause the weight gain..It enhances your appetite therefor you eat more...Overeating is the ONLY WAY you can gain significant weight...
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT...I’d bet that all of you that gained while taking this Med had a tremendous appetite, an adverse reaction of the Med, so you simply ate more & gained...How else are you gonna’ put fat on your body without 1st putting it in your mouth.!.?.!
Re: William (# 1)
I recently started using Spiriva and I know what you're saying about weight gain. I didn't realize it was from the inhaler but it has started recently. Also, bloated. What do I need to do.
Re: Herb (# 185)
wow, herb, have you been on this med? it does not contain a med that does this, this med DOES NOT make you hungry all the time,
Melissa (# 184) --
Please let me know if I can help. We may be able to get litigation started. I'm steadily gaining.
Then when you take those Meds, you’re putting on Water weight...The only way you can add Fat to your body is to Overeat...How else.!.?.! Where does the fat come from if you’re Not overeating.!.?.! Eating too much of the wrong food is pretty much the only way you can gain significant weight...Water weight is usually minimal & can easily be lost.!.!.!
Herb (# 188) --
You're really insistent that you're right, but the problem is that you're not. You assume that everyone on this forum either overeats and/or suffers from water retention. News for you, Herb - we're not stupid and we're not lying. Spiriva causes weight gain, not because it causes us to be hungry so that we overeat. Spiriva does not cause water retention - in fact, most (if not all) of us suffer from dry mouth to some extent because of the medication. So give it up already! Thank you.
Herb (# 188) --
once again Herb, Have you ever taken this med? are you with some drug company? just wondering, there are deep side effects to this drug, and it is a last resort kind of a med, there is nothing else many of us can not take this drug does make you gain weight, we users of this drug see it, once fit individuals gain absorbent amounts in only one section of the body, not arms or legs, if we were over eating it would go through your body not in one area, so please listen to Judith and kindly exit your views as someone who does not know personally, how this drug effects people, and yes, the dry mouth is a huge issue I am constantly drinking water, but 5 pounds a month water gain is not what is going on, I know I do not have 100 pounds of water weight, it would not all be in one certain area
Re: Herb (# 185)
Obviously Herb, you are not on this medication or you might understand what its like to be bloated & overweight. Problem with spiriva is that it happens really fast. Do you really think that someone would stop using a medication thats suppose to help them breath, have you ever been short of breath Herb? Spiriva made me so bloated it made breathing harder definatley not overeating. I had to stop taking it after 6 weeks. Maybe you could pass this on to your friends at the drug company Herb. I'm sure the people on here dont enjoy being short of breath or overweight & bloated.

I've spoken to a number of attorneys way back when all this started, all specializing in cases having to do with medical matters, and none of them would take the case because the chances of winning are somewhere between nil and zero. Although your weight gain since being on Spiriva has been well documented, you have no way to prove that Spiriva alone has caused that weight gain. However, if you can find an attorney who will take the case on a contingency basis please let us all know so we can join in a legal suit.
Herb (# 188) --
I eat like I've always eaten. Yet I gained 10 pounds the month I started Spiriva. I don't like to get off of meds without medical consent. How do i find out exactly what's happening so I can use the Spiriva and not have all the weight gain. Also, in on Adderal. I shouldn't be gaining all this weight.
Re: Herb (# 185)
I still eat like I've always eaten. And on Adderal, yet this past month on Spiriva, I gained 10 pound.
Re: William (# 1)
Please pass on any information. I'm having same problem.
It’s not the Spiriva that’s directly causing your weight gain...The Med. enhances your appetite therefore you gain weight because you eat more bad foods...The ONLY WAY you can gain significant weight is by overeating, not by taking some Med...Although, some Meds can cause you to gain water weight, but a very insignificant amount...”You Are What you Eat”,..How could a pill or a whole bottle of pills, even if taken daily, make you gain as much as 100#’s...You simply gain weight by eating too much of the wrong foods, & if you’re taking Spiriva it could enhance your appetite therefor causing you to eat more, & gain weight.!.!.!
Re: Herb (# 197)
It's not a pill Herb, if you were on the med you would know, and what weight gain from eating only in on section of your body, you are NOT reading comments that we are directing to you,
Re: Herb (# 197)
Enough already! Spiriva is not a pill, does not make anyone hungry, does not cause water retention. Please, just go away and let those of us who actually do take Spiriva exchange our experiences without having to bother with someone who thinks he knows it all about the medication but actually knows nothing.
Re: Herb (# 180)
I was told it has an ingredient that causes water retention. If the weight gain continues, try fluid pill. It doesn't make you eat but your body will hold fluid.
