Spinal Anesthetic On Xarelto Patient
UpdatedI have just read a notice about safety concerns if you are on xarelto and are going to have spinal anesthesia if you have had previous spinal injections. I had between seven and ten cortisone shots in my lower back between 2011and 2014, followed by radial ablation on both sides in 2014. I will be having knee surgery in a month and my doctor mentioned that he uses a spinal anesthetic. I won't be seeing him till a couple of days before the surgery and wonder if that is a little late to discuss it with him. Do you have information on what percentage of patients have problems?

I've been asked to give more information about my problem. I have looked at other blogs and it seems that Xeralto has been given to patients for other reasons than AF. These patients have been taken off of the meds after their problems are resolved and none has mentioned any special way of going off of Xeralto. I am supposing that they may have been on a lower dose than mine, which is 20mg. My husband is a retired family practice doctor, and we have decided that I should stop taking Xeralto, beginning yesterday in fact, so that the rebound effect of having trouble with clots forming should be past by the time I have my surgery. I do not intend to go back onto that medication. I have had 4 AF events in 17 years, the third happened while having a heart cauterization, and the fourth two weeks later. I believe that also was related to my having the heart cath. I had strong symptoms with the beginning of each event, and don't believe I am having silent ones, but have purchased a Garmin fitness watch that has a heart monitor on it, so I will see if my heart is beating at a high rate when I have had no exertion to cause it. My husband can check my heart any time I am concerned about it. I am not recommending anyone else go off this drug, but I certainly would recommend to anyone considering it that they do not go on it. It is convenient that you don't need to watch the food you eat, and don't need to be evaluated periodically, but the many side effects, plus the worry that you might be in an accident that causes you to have a brain bleed, or some other type of bleeding that can not be stopped, makes it not worth it.
