Spinal Fusion And Newer Pain Meds
UpdatedI have been dealing with back pain and surgeries since 2006 and I am now at the point that my meds are not working very well and I really do not want to go any higher. I take 9mg of Hydromorph contin twice a day and 2mg of dilaudid 8+/day, 75mg lyrica twice/day, celebrex 200mg/day and celexa 20mg/day. I need to have my third surgery-spinal fusion in three levels and I am wondering what others have experienced and what other meds out there might work better or is there anything new?? I am 38 years old and a mother of four young children and this is all but broken me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advanced and be well.

hi there I don't want to seem to be a pest but does anyone have any input to add to my post, where can I get the answers I need or is this a place to ad more questions of comments. I really need some thoughts, I'm at the end of my rope. Thank you for your time.
well I guess this is not the best site for answers to real pain issues, the druggies sure seem to get answered pretty fast.
Elaine, I apologize, it is really difficult for use to keep up with all the posts on our site, we have many posts made each day and only a limited number of people to handle them.
Have you gotten any other information, yet?
A medication that you may want to ask your doctor about is Fentanyl, it is a very strong narcotic opiate and is available in several formulations, one of which is a time released patch. It's over 80 time stronger than Morphine and has worked well to help many chronic pain sufferers to regain their quality of life.

Thank you so much for answering and sorry for my impatience. I have tried Fentanyl, but could not get them to stick and they gave me a rash. Do you know if the Oxycontin has been change in Canada also. I usually bounce back and forth between narcotics and I'm due to do it again soon. If it's changed like the in the states I'm worried about them not working. Thanks for your impute.
Elaine, as far as I know, it's the same as what's available in the U.S. and also manufactured by Purdue.
As to the Fentanyl, there are other formulations available, such as a time released gel pill that you let dissolve on your gum line, it's called Fentora, so that might be a better choice to try.

There is also a lollipop formulation of it called Actiq.

I have had spinal infusions and now I'm getting iron infusion for anemia and now having back pain. Does the iron infusion have anything to do with this issue
As one who has 7 spinal surgeries, including 3 fusions I would have to say that the body becomes tolerant to the pain medication, so that more needs to be taken too achieve the same result. As to changing meds, after a short while the same thing happens.
I know this because after moire than 20 years of pain 24/7 there is basically nothing that helps me.
Sorry too be negative, but this is my experience.
