So Why Is Oxycodone Ever Prescribed...

...if the acetaminophen in Percocet enhances its action? I just had surgery for bone spurs and was given oxy, 5mgs. For some reason I thought that oxy would be stronger--I think I heard it somewhere--but now that just seems wrong. For that matter, why prescribe Percocet, given the liver implications, and instead just give people oxy and tell them they may carefully and occasionally supplement it with NSAIDS?

Hello, Tristan! How are you?

Yes, the Acetaminophen potentiates the action of the Oxycodone, for some people. It doesn't work for everyone.

Oxycodone by itself works better for some people and, if you look at the FDA information on it, you'll see that it is also available in higher doses that are in different formations, including a time released one for better pain control.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Is there anything else I can help with?
