According to a product information page from Roche Pharmaceuticals, the shelf life of this antibiotic is 5 years, so you are definitely in the clear as far as taking it a few months past due.
In addition, a Harvard Medical School family health article mentions that, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. This conclusion was based upon a study conducted at the request of the US military due to stockpiles of expensive drugs they could otherwise need to replace every few years. The conclusion was that 90% of those drugs remained effective 10 - 15 years after the expiration date.
I don't know whether or not the drug you have happens to be one of these drugs from the study... (I have not seen the list of drugs used in this study), but this should help shed some light on the subject of expired meds.

I hope this helps!
On 1/10/2019 I was given this med (SMZ/TMP DS 800-160 TABLET) for an infection. However, before I could take it, they called & give me a different type antibiotic because they thought it was for an ear infection rather than kidney or UTI. However, I've had enough Kidney & UTI infections to know that it is happening again & is VERY painful in back over the kidney. It is that way 24hrs with no position of comfort or relief. I want to take this now, which is every 12 hrs, 7 days. I have a full prescription, but I need to know if they are still good after a yr & 8 months. I don't want to go out to a dr's office in this pandemic since my age & health would be compromised.
I have the antibiotic SMTZ/TMP DS 800. It is 3 yrs old and has been in a bedroom drawer. Is this safe to take? Thank you
