DO NOT take any Sulfa drugs!!!! Just look at the comments!! This is such a horrible drug. My tongue is still swollen from Sept 29, 2012....violent diaherra. HJ

Sugar, I agree. The doctors in the ER said it could kill me if I take sulfa again.

I wrote yesterday - did you get a message from Sugar? Don't know why it wasn't passed on to you? Just read below... it is awful DO NOT TAKR AND DRUGS WITH SULFA IN THEM ANF BACTRIM IS LOADED WITH IT. READ GINGER'S STATEMENT. God Bless!

Jackie thank goodness you are getting some better. Very smart with the letter! Today my tongue is some better, chewed alot of ice yesterday. I didn't have those awful side effects like you and Ginger so guess I'm lucky. Remember you can have flare ups; you'll be surprised by them; let's just hope they don't happen.

Thank you so much for your replys. I think we need to all share and communicate for protect our health. The hospitals and doctors dont seem to pursue it as we are trying. as for the SYMPTOMS...
I will share the ones that I know. But the info is available on the web. You can go to the FDA or the CDC and get lots of info.
Hives, whelps and circles
Itching
burning
blisters
body pain
aches
muscle spasms
joint pain
insomnia
diarea and constipation
choking
throat swelling
i had body swelling in my hands and other places
bruising in various random places
tingling, restlesness
blood test results not normal
high kidney pannel, Creatinine
low kidney function, Clearance
There are more and other symptoms such as syndromes that I have not listed.. The FDA has a more complete listing. Everyone that has a reaction should notify the drug SECTION of the FDA and explain exact details of the drug usage and results/symptoms. They will have a record of this. Then notify all pharmicies that you use of your allergy. BACTRIM contains 2 different drugs. It is not just one. So, either or both can be causing the problem.

Yep I'm going to do that...drug section with the FDA. I've now found because of this BACTRIM, . and my tongue I can't eat Jalepenos, etc and I've loved hot Mexican food. We spent 16 years vacationing for a week in Rosarito, Baja. I'm now thinking that some effects can be permanent 'cause I didn't eat any hot foods for 2 1/2 months, then did . . then a flare up. Hi Ginger, thank you for the kind words. I talked to my pharmacist last night and he said insomnia is a very unusual side effect of Bactrim, or to be specific Sulfahexazole, but if it was the Bactrim that caused it, then it will go away at some point. How long has it been since you stopped taking the drug? My friend had a serious allergic reaction to the drug in 2008 and it basically ruined his life for a couple of years. He had the rash and everything, and he's trying to help me through this. I wish you a return to your normal health!

Jonathan, it was in August that I took the drug and ended up in the ER room on the 10th day after starting the drug. Severe rash over my whole body, intense itching and burning. My skin on my forearms are still blotchy. I received a steroid shot and a prescription and the rash was pretty much gone in 2 weeks. I hope you scrolled down and read all our comments. We have all suffered from this drug. I

You probably should of went to the ER. Not that I am trying to be a doctor, but just because your side effects happened so fast and so severe. The dr. told me when I went to the ER "if your tongue starts swelling, come right back". Really scared me.
Sure hope you are ok.

I would probably go to the ER, you might still need a steroid to counteract the effects. Just because the drug is out of your system doesn't mean it's effects won't linger. Best to be safe, though I agree I think you and I are the lucky ones, the ones who had reactions within a few days before the drug could build up to toxic levels. Make a note to avoid ALL Sulfa drugs in the future and I think you'll be ok

Don't be too alarmed, nerves are tricky and can take a long time to return to normal. Damaged nerves may never return to normal but sounds more like yours were stressed. Everyone I talked to, from my doctor to my pharmacist, said if you're system is out of whack cause of a Bactrim reaction, it will go back to normal. Just give it some time, and good luck. If you want to bring in a chiropractor, I'd ask over the phone first if they think they could actually help you, describing your symptoms and your suspected cause in detail. An honest chiropractor may just say sorry sir, can't help you. In fact my treatments might make it worse.

TiaM- the neck pain was something that i suffered with as well. First hives, then neck/upper back pain/burning. 2 things- (1) ice, ibuprofen, and chiropractic TOTALLY helped to bring that inflamed nerve (s) down...helped tremendously. (2) I only took one single dose of the Bactrim and it cleared my UTI. Your few doses could have possibly cleared yours too. Drink a ton of water and pay close attention, but good chance a few doses would wipe it out.

Sixinthehouse, it's amazing that this medication can do this at all...I haven't had hives, a fever, or a rash. I'm sorry to all who have, though. That sounds miserable!
I didn't take the Bactrim last night, and I woke up this morning and my neck/back pain seems to be much better. I have a headache though.
I am slightly worried about the UTI because it feels like it might still be there. I called my doctor and requested another antibiotic--something that doesn't have Sulpha in it, as I think this is the main problem with Bactrim.
I hope everyone is doing ok, hang in there. We should petition this thing off the market!

Also, thanks for this thread, everyone. I thought I was going crazy...
Everyone kept telling me it was just a pulled muscle, but every time I would lay down this weird burning pain was in the back of my head. Definitely not normal, and I hadn't even done anything to pull it.
Of course, a day off of the medication and my neck, spine, and head are feeling better.
Hmmmmm, right?

FYI to frequent UTI sufferers- to prevent.... acidophilus daily. Not only good for the urinary tract, but great for the digestive tract and skin :)

Well,
finally got a new prescription. Going to pick it up. Hopefully it kicks the UTI. Felt like it was starting to come back because the doctor took so long to get back with me to prescribe me something else to take care of it (I called three times, left three messages with his nurses).
I just want to be healthy!

I was prescribed 10 days of bactrim. After a few days I had a bad lower back ache on right side. i took many ibuprofin for this which helped. Then I broke out in a rash around collar, covering back, on arms, and entire head looked sunburned. The itchyness and burning took a few days to surface. i thought this was allergic reaction to the ibuprofin but now i think its the bactrim. Afterall i have taken ibuprofin 100 times or so before. i also have had aweful headaches. Hopefully Ill be ok cause I got the bactrim prescribed on my last day of having health insurance.
