Side Effects Following Prolia Injection (Page 3) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI am 60 yrs old and suffer from osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and myofascial pain syndrome. After discussing with my endocrinologist, I received my first injection of Prolia two days ago. Had diarrhea approximately 12 hrs later in the middle of the night. Awoke the next day with headache over entire head and face. That evening (12:30 am) I vomited approximately 10 times in succession. Awoke 5 hrs later with terrible pain and tightness from the top of my head down my neck, shoulders, and upper back. I am frightened to see where the pain will travel next, especially after reading the posts on this forum. Is there a drug out there to counteract the Prolia. I will definitely not be getting another shot in 6 mos. My doctor told me that the main side effect of this drug is worsening of skin conditions, such as eczema. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Re: Nikki (# 74)
Yes, they are stopping Calcitonin. Drs. hated it because no money in it for them. If you have not had blood clots (DVT's/PE'S) you can take Evista. It's an old one that still works too. There is also the one that Merck still makes but they have been sued over and over about it so I, personally, said no which at present leaves me with zero choices. Doctors can be a real problem. They seem to be in love with biologics and biologics all have the same thing in common -- diminishing our immune system. Be well~
Re: Poodle (# 75)
I'm 75, was not on drugs, spent 30 years at a gym and was pretty healthy. I had one injection of Prolia on March 1, 2017. Did not do my research and really regret it or I would not have gotten it. I had reverse total shoulder replacement in late 2016 and my Ortho said at a followup that I had weak bones when he did the surgery and needed to get on Prolia right away. Afraid that the prosthesis might come loose, he sent an order to my endocrinologist. I have osteopenia and have had a stress fracture in my knee, and in metatarsals. I asked a friend who was on Prolia if there were any side effects and she said "no". The nurse who gave me the injection said the only side effect could be at the injection site. WRONG!!! Three days later I had severe muscle, bone and joint pain which continues to this day. 9 months later I had pain in my abdomen and had to have a CT scan which showed nothing. A month later while I was doing well in physical therapy for my shoulder surgery, got severe pain in shoulder which affected my recovery. By April, the pain in my thighs was so severe I could hardly walk (and I previously could walk 3-4 miles with no problem). I've had MRI's for my hip with no diagnosis and an MRI of my spine. The orthopedist says I have sciatica and the pain is so severe that my leg twitches and I have trouble sleeping at night. When I get out of my SUV or a chair, I have to stand for a few minutes to see if my legs will work. And here's a kicker....I got a severe case of shingles September 1st and continue to have post herpetic neuralgia --terrible pain-- which my doc says was caused by Prolia lowering my immune system. I had gotten the shingles vaccine. And now the final straw today. My eye doctor concluded after many evaluations that the severe pain in my eye is probably Prolia related because everything he looked at in my eye was normal. So, thanks to my failure to research Prolia before the shot, I am in severe pain everywhere. And I wouldn't wish this nerve pain from shingles on my worst enemy. I'm very depressed. If it weren't for my sweet husband I'd take a bottle of pills and call it a life.
Re: SusiQ (# 76)
I'm so glad that you have a sweet husband. Yes, another side effect is depression, something that I have never known in my life even after burying a lover years ago and then my lovely husband. I find that if I drink plenty of water and I mean plenty, that helps the bowels and the spirits. I also take Omega oil 3,6,7,9 and find it excellent. Wash with Silcocks base and moisten the skin with the same. Hope we all feel better soon. I hope to go for a good walk later today.
Re: Poodle (# 13)
Thank u so much, poodle for the great information.....my doctor insists on me going on Prolia....but i will definitely refuse.....thank you.
Daisy~This is a little difficult to understand so here goes. Everything alive or has ever been alive on Planet Earth is carbon based. That means there are half lives and there is never an end to half lives as they go to infinity. Amgen states the half life of Prolia is 26 days so 1/2 of it will be gone from the body in 26 days, then 26 more days another 1/2 of that 1/2 and another 26 more days another 1/2 of that 1/2 on to infinity. Prolia is biologic, made from elements that grow or grew on this Earth of ours. It can never, ever totally leave the human body. This is how we are able to find out how old some antiquity is by carbon dating, which means how much carbon is left in that particular antiquity. Now go give your Doc a lesson. Be well~Pood
How Prolia got past the FDA - It's called Mission Creep Changed to Warning Creep: Soon Prolia began to appear no safer than the bisophosphonates though it belonged to a different class of drugs. A monoclonal antibody derived from genetically engineered Chinese hamster ovary cells, Prolia carries warnings like other “MoAbs” about opportunistic infections, anaphylaxis and worse. Two years after its approval, Amgen issued warnings that Prolia could cause serious risks like "hypocalcemia, serious infections, suppression of bone turnover, including osteonecrosis of the jaw” as well as “atypical femoral fracture” and “dermatologic adverse events." Notably, these are the same risks bisphosphonates bone drugs pose. Six months ago also reported osteonecrosis of the jaw with Prolia.
Everyone has heard of "mission creep." In the pharmaceutical world, “approval” creep means getting the FDA to approve a drug for one thing and pushing a lot of other drug approvals through on the coattails of the first one.
But there is another, more insidious creep seen with drugs like Prolia- "warning creep": acknowledging new and alarming warnings after a drug is approved and in wide use.
Like so many expensive drugs aggressively marketed today--Prolia costs roughly $1650 a year—a risky drug made billions despite its risks, which were clear when it was first approved. Prolia “provided Amgen with $884 million in US sales between 2011 and 2013 and $1.4 billion worldwide for this same stretch,” This is why we have to continually be after the FDA with each and every side effect. Now you know the truth~
pliz... my mother died after the 6th Prolia.... Don't let they muse your body for these statistics
I think I may have been wrong about Actonel. it may be one of the good guys like Calcitonin is. Check it out. @Kitty~not websites, just different threads on this site. It all depends on how one words the question regarding Prolia side effects. Seek here on medschat and you will find them. Hugs~
Oh god ladies! Wish I had found this blog six months ago! I have been suffering with 3 different types of arthritis now for around ten years and in such horrible pain! All of your stories have opened my eyes! My arthritis told me prolia had more pros than cons for side effects. That is so far from the truth! I just had my second injection of prolia and was diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes yesterday! My pain has become so intolerable I cannot hardly stand it anymore. Please, which medication is the best with less side effects??? I cannot live this way much longer. I go to pain management but the prolia has poised my body so bad don't know if there is anything out there to reverse all the damage of the injections. I'm thankful for stumbling on this blog and please keep posting and sharing your experiences! My husband tells me just walk it out or runs around the block. I need be in a circle with people who understand. Thank you all and God bless!
So sorry to hear that and thank you for sharing. I only hope more people find this site and read what others are also saying.
Definatey has made my skin condition worse. My scalp is pealing!
Just bearing with it until it slowly dissipates is all I know. Magnesium large dose helped muscle spasms and muscle pain
I had better outcomes with Accupuncture than anything.
My Prolia injection from a few months ago continues to affect my whole body, inside and out. Muscle and bone pain, low energy, chronic cough, itching all over from head to toe, vaginal itching, loose teeth, weak bladder and leaking, diarrhea that changes to constipation... weak hands and eye muscles... I need to boost my immune system. What site did you visit and what are you taking to boost it, so I can ask my doctor...
please....don't use it anymore.....my mom died because of that injection...
If it were me....
Call your doctor and be seen. If it's an allergic reaction you need to be monitored. Get help for side effects. Remember it's not you, it's the Prolia and you are not imagining side effects.
I was told there was no way to counter balance the Prolia and that I'd have to wait it out. I have decided to not get another shot.
I am no longer embarrassed to go to the doctor and get my side effects dealt with.
I am so very sorry for your Mom and for her daughter, You...thank you for sharing her story... It was very impactful. Thank you for sharing your journey...
Still have dental problems and my jaw hurts all the time. Poodle said I should be going to a pain Doc. I did. He basically said that they were going to lower my pain meds and then " suck it up!" I'm screwed.
I am on on 10 week of prolea injection and am in so muchpain I wished I had never agreed to have it mussel pain joint pain I just want it out of my system I'm not sleeping with the pain, I was a really active person till this injection and now have to push myself to make an effort
Hi Everyone~Just found out we have another death from Prolia. Just like C. Louise's father. He had dental work done, got an infection that turned cancerous and went to his brain. Walking back out his femur broke too before he passed away.
Can anyone else take over the job of searching for attorneys?? Diana is not the least bit well and is having surgery soon. I'm having my total knee replacement in about a month. We need someone with good net skills and that is not fearful of talking to attorneys. Do I have any volunteers? It's an up hill battle since Prolia is so new that it's not on their radar yet. Hopefully, we can change that! :-) Be well all~
