Shortage Of Generic Maxzide
UpdatedMy pharmacey told me there was a shortage and they don't know when they can get some. They called around and found some at a competing Drug store. Whats up?

Maxzide contains Triamterene and Hydrochlorothiazide, it is commonly used to treat high blood pressure and cardiac conditions.
Shortages of this drug combination were reported to the FDA and the ASH-SP on April 20, 2011 by Sandoz, Watson and Mylan Pharmaceuticals, however, they didn't give a reason for the shortage.
It does, however, appear to affect all available dosages. Mylan and Watson estimate that their supply should be back on the market late this month, Sandoz said they should have the problem rectified early in May.

Are there any questions?
Well it is mid May and Target says it can't get this drug and I should look elsewhere. Anybody know where to get it?
Sarah, from what I have been reading in posts on here, it seems that there is still a problem with the supply, everywhere.
Have you tried talking to your doctor to see if there is something else that you can for now?
A very similar medication would be Aldactazide, which contains Spironolactone and Hydrochlorothiazide.

Just confirmed with the manufacturers rep at the distributor's office. Manufacturers are not expecting to be able to make these (name brand or generic) until some time in September 2011. Please contact your medical provider for a suitable alternative.
Thank you-i have been worried about my med. I was not able to fill the brand and got a generic was does not work at all.
Target was finally able to fill my prescription this last week (with generic which is just fine with me). 3 month supply for $10!
I HAD TO GET A REFILL ON MY MAXZIDE AT TARGET,& THEY TOLD ME THEY HAVE A SHORTAGE , OR THEY MIGHT DISCONTINUE THAT PILL ? IS THIS TRUE ? IF SO WHAT WILL TAKE PLACE OF THAT MAXZIDE ? I HAVE BEEN TAKING THIS DRUG FOR MANY YEARS ! PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND IT & WILL TARGET BE GETTING ANYMORE ? I NEED TO KNOW SO I CAN CONTACT MY DOCTOR. IF THEY DO DISCONTINUE WILL THERE BE SOMETHING WITH THE SAME INGREDS ? VICTORIA
Victoria, yes, for some reason there is a shortage on the Triamterene that this medication contains, however, no details have been released as to why there is a shortage. Companies had predicted that they'd have it back on the market several weeks ago, but that clearly didn't happen.
So, it would probably be a good idea to speak to your doctor about using a comparable medication, such as Aldactazide, which contains Spironolactone and Hydrochlorothiazide.

Confirmed the shortage of Dyazide (also known as Triamterene-HCTZ) again today. Now the manufacturers are hoping to go back into production some time late this fall. Please talk to your physician about using an alternative during this period. There are several different alternatives including Aldactazide, Lasix, or Hydrochlorothiazide. Your individual needs should be considered by your physician before determining which of these are most appropriate for you.
Why are these pharmaceutical companies playing games with our life? I habe been taking maxide for some
time. I finally found a combination of drugs to keep my blood pressure under control. Now they want to see how bad we want it. Whats this world coming to. Their are too many greedy people on the earth now. Greed is destroying our society. Only God can help us now.
@Vaughn, they are not playing around. Unfortunately, shortages of individual ingredients are normal from time-to-time. Most people are scared of the shortage because that is the medicine they have been using for a long time.
Good News everyone! We received our order of Triamterene-HCTZ (generic Dyazide) this week. If you have no already done so, check with your pharmacy to see if they received their orders this week (or maybe early next week.) If they use McKesson as their distributor, they should be able to get it.
Had this happen to me today with my dyazide that I have been taking for 30 years for water retention. I was shocked that there was a shortage. The safeway pharmacy gave me maxide and said it was the same medicine in generic form.
Yes. The only difference between Dyazide and Maxide is that one is a tablet and the other is a capsule. Otherwise, they are the same ingredients -- Triamterene-Hydrochlorothiazide.
It's July and the drugist told me they have no idea when the supply would be back? The replacement they gave me does not work at all.
Before I went to Texas 2 weeks ago, I tried to fill my Rx for generic Maxide at a Michigan Walmart and learned about the problem. So when I arrived in Texas, I immediately went to the local Walmart, where I was able to get a 30 day supply (my Rx was for 90 days). The pharmacist there told me they get it intermittently. He explained to me that Dyazide (capsule) was discontinued and this created an over demand for Maxide (same thing but in tablet form). He said to keep checking Walmarts as one never knows when they get some in but they run out quickly. Today I checked another Walmart in Michigan and I could not believe they gave me a 60 day supply. I saw them counting and it looked like that was about all they had.
I'm so tired of reading about shortages of drug after drug. The DEA has no right and are playing with fire by abruptly cutting off patients taking medications long term. They don't care if you have terrible withdrawals, seizures, whatever. They care about themselves and lining their pockets. Healthcare and the drug market in this country are absolutely pathetic, embarrassing and a total mess. The people running them are either complete morons or just evil. They should all be thrown in prison for endangering millions of lives.
